Kevin Mitchell vs. Edwin Valero.

To be honest I was expecting Mitchell to beat Prescott better than he did. I really was not ever sold on Prescott being worthy of a top 10 ranking at lightweight. He's basically crap as far as I'm concerned.
I don't dislike Mitchell by the way, I've been following his career for a long time. He's talented and should be good enough to pull out the win against Katsidis, but by my reckonings Valero is just on a different level.Comment

I wouldn't call Mitchell a defense first fighter TBH. He's pretty well rounded, but as he was coming up he was always described as a "spiteful" and "vicious" fighter. He maintained composure well against Prescott, but that's because he just seemed very wary of Prescott's power after watching the Khan fight.Comment

I think Mitchell would have a chance. Valero's slicker than people give him credit for though, as we saw against DeMarco. Valero's quick with dynamite in his fights, and he fights quite 'relaxed' i.e. his shoulders are not tight and as a result he can fire his punches off quickly. Mitchell is a little more uptight but he has quick hands too and good lateral movement. I've noticed when Mitchell is moving backwards though and throws a jab he almost always leaves himself open. His jab doesn't come back to his chin in the traditional 'trombone' fashion but drops around his waist before coming back up to protect his face. That could hurt him against Edwin because of the long rapier-like left hand... I just get the feeling Mitchell's gameplan might unravel in the middle rounds and he could get stopped late.Comment

Valero hasn't really fought anybody worth shouting about yet. Neither has Mitchell for that matter.
In my opinion, it is hard to guage where each fighter is at on a world class level. Mitchell is a boxer/brawler who can punch, and has a good chin, while Valero is a brawler, who has concussive power ,and also has a good chin.
Mitchell's fight with Katsidis will tell us what level he is at when compared to the other top lightweights in the division. If he can manage to outbox or maybe KO Katsidis, it can probably be said that he can at least be competitive against the likes of Diaz, Marquez, Soto, and Funeka. Valero is still an unknown quantity. We have yet to see him fight a top, world class lightweight. Maybe Marquez blows him out early. Maybe Diaz outworks him over 12. We just don't know yet. All we know is that Valero is a very dangerous quantity, and he can box.Comment
