      • How sad would it be to see one of the greats (and one of my favorite fighters ever) get his head taken off in one round by Manny? Lucky for Erik, there is no way Manny would take a fight like this.

What happened there? Well, let us see.

3/19/05 Paq loses a twelve round decision to Morales (130 pounds)
9/10/05 Paq defeats Hector Valazquez by TKO in round 6 (130 pounds)
1/21/06 Paq defeats Morales by TKO in round 10 (130 pounds)
7/2/06 Paq defeats Oscar Larios twelve round decision (130 pounds)
11/18/06 Paq defeats Morales by KO round 3 (130 pounds)
4/14/07 Paq defeats Jorge Solis by KO round 8 (130 pounds)
10/6/07 Paq defeats Marco Antonio Barrera 12 round decision (130 pounds)
3/15/08 Paq defeats JMM 12 round split decision (130 pounds)
6/28/08 Paq defeats David Diaz by TKO round 9 (FINALLY, 135 POUNDS)

You claim Paq moved to 135 right after the Morales fight in your post. In fact, after his last fight with Morales, Paq fought at 130 three more times, a time span of one year and seven months. As for why he didnt fight Cotto at 147, you must first go back to his fight with DLH. DLH was widely expected to fight the winner of Cotto vs Mararito when Mayweather retired suddenly, after watching that fight DLH decided he didnt want to fight either one of them, he knew they were both better fighters than him at that point. In steps Paq, surprising the world by forcing DLH to quit on his stool and retire.
It was plain to see that Cotto, even after a loss to Margarito, was a better welterweight than DLH. After dropping to 140 and beating Hatton, possibly retiring him as well, Paq returned to 147. It is very uncommon for any fighter to leap to a weight class and fight the top dog in that weight class. That is what Paq was looking at, the fight was easily made because they have the same promoter. They asked for a catchweight because at that time Roach and Paq were not sure if Paq belonged at 147. After the fight it was clear that he did, and shortly after the fight Roach announced that Paq would stay at 147, he belonged at 147, and no more catchweights would be asked for. Team Paq requested a catchweight for the simple fact that they were testing the welterweight waters. The Clottey fight was contested at 147, and any future fights at welterweight will be at 147. Do you have any more simple questions that you would like me to answer? Feel free to ask.

                    • Morales was a better fighter than Pacquiao, he showed that in their first fight. Erik simply "got old" in round six of their second fight. Morales was never the same after those three minutes. Sometimes a fighter just hits the wall in the space of one round: all the wars Terrible had just caught up with him in that round.

Had the second fight taken place at 135 Morales would have had a better chance of winning as half the battle for Erik was getting down to 130 again. Even having taken so many punches in his career, having been in so many wars, and having struggled to make the weight, Morales was still able to outclass Pac over the first five rounds. Had he not had to kill himself making weight, he would've been able to take Pac's punches better and may have held on to win.

After the amazing FOTY candidate that was the first fight, I believe contracts were immediately signed for the second and third fights to take place ... at 130 - a huge mistake given that Erik could barely make the weight anymore.

Had the trilogy taken place earlier in Morales' career he would've won at least two of the fights. (Though, obviously, with Pac being at lower weights than Erik back then it would've been hard to arrange!)

Pacman would win a fourth fight at any weight.

Good luck to Erik, though, in his comeback. I'd love to see him win another title...and then retire for good: health intact.
