Sorry I couldn't call in. It was long distance. See if I can answer best I can.
What does this say about MMA?
A)Strikeforce's relation with Showtime is on a cartoonish level to the point where they tried to get super eyeballs by making a freakshow match between Toney/Walker just to get press and hype from CBS
B)CBS Sports has a heirachy that is so grey haired and so oldskool that they're willing to bury promotions their own parent company is putting out. Don't believe me? Ask a MMA fan about coverage of the last Strikeforce CBS event. It was non-existant. Getting Toney was a way to buy adspace or even get a hand from CBS Sports.
What no one knows is that Strikeforce has enough manpower to operate on a regional level. They are having major problems on a national level to the point that they thought Showtime would help them with that. But with Showtime handpicking fights, the exciting roster they have while co-promoting with DREAM and M-1 is viciously squandered by freak fights and mediocre matches on the main card due to name value alone.
C) Dana is evil enough to swipe Toney from them to piss on their parade as well as be a total fanboy and express a morbid curiosity in seeing that SEG type matchup happen between the two sports.
In what ways can this affect Boxing positively and negatively?
Positively, I could see it as a way to promote longevity of fighters in ways of health and marketability. Not only is it a great way to protect that bowl of spaghetti called your brain, it's a great way to bring in new eyeballs to your sport. it also provides great opportunities to try new ways of fitness training while seeing what one is worth in other levels of combat.
Negatively, while I'm not that in tune with the Boxing community, the only thing I could see is the fanboys and really ignorant boxing writers destroying the boxer's career simply for getting caught in a peruvian necktie and not being able to get out.
Could we start to see a trend of boxers converting to the “dark side” if Toney and Mayorga are successful?
While I'm not holding my breath with Toney, if someone like Mayorga could at least last a whole match. Literally go through the grind and last a match, I could see a couple of name fighters wanting to try it out just to see how far they could go. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if Ricky Hatton would be willing to give it a go. Couture has been corresponding with him.Comment

I forgot to add that signing Toney and having him fight in the UFC is also going to be Dana's middle finger to sports media for hanging off of Herschel Walker's nuts and even considering the possibility of Walker fighting Jose Caseco. He's hoping that come July when Toney does fight (possibly against Couture), Sports media snags onto that and ride Toney's nuts because the higher ups are, so that when Toney loses, it makes them look like idiots.
That's what Dana White thinks. Not the rest of the community.
