He could have stayed with Warren and made a bunch of worthless defenses and made millions even after having his block knocked off but I respect the man b/c he packed his bags and is attempting to do all that is nessesary to go down as a legend. Roy Jones went from middleweight champion to even becoming a heavyweight champion because that is what legends are capable of.
Joe was more than happy to face Jones (and Hopkins in 2002, who backed out of an agreement to fight Joe for 3 million). The only slightly negative thing anyone can really put on Joe -- if you can even call it a negative -- is the fact that he said he would want a damn good payday because Jones was a risk.

That's it. Otherwise, the criticism in regards to not fighting Jones back when he was prime is unwarranted.

Omar Sheika was never a dangerous fighter to nobody except Scottie Pemberton, when Sheika lost to Tony Booth that should have been Calzaghe's turning point to never even cosidering fighting an opponent who lost to a man whose record was 28W-44L lol

No, I remember the Sheika hype from back in the day. There was quite a bit of it, actually. Just as Lacy was supposedly the baddest man on the planet in 2006. Americans tend to overrate or build up excessive amounts of hype for their fighters, then **** on them when they lose. The same thing would have happened to Chad Dawson, had Calzaghe fought and beaten him.

BTW, I was born in the states, although I lived most of my life in England. I have no bias against America at all.

the only guy i respected joe for beating was kessler, the only guy he fought as an in prime fighter, besides lacy who is **** and got spanked by the not so good roy jones. but since ward beat kessler in the fashion he did joes legacy is forever tarnished.

Joe calzaghe can say what he wants to say about mayweather but the level of competition crushes joe calzaghes opponents. joe calzaghe would never face the judah's, corrales, dlh, arturo gatti of his weight division. thats why hes avoiding dawson and froch, because they are "in prime fighters"

            Jones considers Calzaghe fight

Joe Calzaghe has moved a step closer to his dream fight with Roy Jones junior after the American's agent, Brad Jacobs, confirmed that they were considering a match with the Welshman.

Undefeated WBO super middleweight champion Calzaghe, who destroyed number one challenger Mario Veit inside a round in Cardiff on Saturday, has long wanted to face Jones.

Calzaghe has also struggled to catch the interest of the American TV companies and a fight against Jones, regarded by many as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world at the moment, would certainly attract huge viewing figures.

"Roy and I have been talking about Joe for a while and more importantly we watched his fight this past weekend with Mario Veit," said Jacobs.

"He certainly looked terrific. Joe's a long-standing champion and he deserves all the accolades he's receiving.

"We're anxious to initiate talks about Roy potentially fighting Joe, maybe later in 2001."

            Start talking

With Jones appearing willing to fight in the United Kingdom, the 73,000 capacity Millennium Stadium in Cardiff has been touted as a possible venue.

Jacobs said that Jones - who holds the IBF, WBC, WBA and IBO light heavyweight titles - would also be willing to drop down a weight to fight Calzaghe.

Such an arrangement would suit both fighters. Calzaghe could stay at the weight he is comfortable with, while Jones - a former IBF super middleweight champion - would not risk losing any of his light heavyweight belts.

"I fired off a fax to Frank Warren (Calzaghe's agent) earlier today asking him when he might be available to sit down and start talking about these matters," Jacobs added.

Jacobs admitted that, apart from WBO champion Dariusz Michalczewski, the light heavyweight division had run out of challenges.

The Jones camp would also consider a match with the fighter who emerges on top from the middleweight tussle between Bernard Hopkins, Felix Trinidad and William Joppy, although the bout would have to be at super middleweight.
If Frank Warren wanted to make the fight it would have happened, on the contrary why go in reverse and fight Calzaghe when you could move all the way up to heavyweight and do something few men have ever done instead of staying where it is comfortable. Im not hating on Joe not moving up im just saying that there is still a void left in Calzaghe's career. If he truly is done for good I'm happy for him and his title defenses is something that will probably ever happen again at least for awhile not with the level of competion that is currently at that weight. Calzaghe is the ultimate gentleman and if I were him I'd be proud of my accomplishments but I know that there is a burning desire for him to put the finishing touches on his resume

I appreciate your knowledge of the sport, don't get me wrong I believe Joe is a legend in his own right, and yes Jones could have dropped down for a showdown in Europe, I just think Joe had the skills to transend his career a bit further than he did. Alot of that probably had alot to do with his promoter whom he's still in court to this day. You are definately correct pointing out how fighters here in the states are often time overhyped as Lacy was but the real condenseurs of the sport would have knew Joe was no joke if he put a whipping on Chad Dawson. I thought Joe would have jumped on him when Glen Johnson was razor close to stopping him. Had he done that he would have really left the division in ruins.
