It's okay to get beat but it's is not okay to pretend Calzaghe's resume holds a candle to other great fighters in their respective weight class. Even Ricky Hatton resume is more impressive than Calzaghe, at least he tried to fight the best of his era and he has nothing to be ashamed of.

He was a super middleweight boxer and the best in that short divisions period. Enough said.

I'll say this Calzaghe is one of the greatest WBO champions of all time but when you have a prime James Toney and a prime Roy Jones in the Super MiddleWeight Division and you don't face even 1 of them until their over the hill, hell I'd even say he could have challenged Darius Michalczewski at light Heavy and been a two division champion without ever leaving Europe where we all know the competion has never been as fierce as it is in America Period

Jones moved to light heavy a whole year before Joe even became a champion. He was not obligated to fight anyone in a higher division. People don't seem to think about that, because it never gets mentioned (except by me). I mean, would you expect say Cotto to move to 154 and crucify him for not fighting Paul Williams or some **** like that? So what's the reason for expecting Joe to travel to America and move up a weight class when he wasn't even really known in America until 2006?

Funny that you mention Michalczewski, the guy a lot of people think Jones avoided.

Lets not pretend that beating Roy Jones after he'd been knocked out twice and Bernard Hopkins after He'd been beaten twice by and OLYMPIAN and turned 42 solidifies anything. My comments are not raced or location biased here look at Chad Dawson he would be in the same position as Calzaghe b/c yes he beat Tarver 2x and Glen Johnson and he's undefeated. He could even beat Tarvoris Cloud and a make a couple of lame defenses and retire undefeated. Does any of that make him special the answer is no. Thank God that we have a legit Champion in Jean Pacal who I believe will give Dawson a run for his money.

September 2000 (yes, 10 years ago!)

                Calzaghe ready for ultimate challenge

Wales' WBO super middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe has thrown down the gauntlet to Roy Jones Jr.

Few would care to cross Jones, the undisputed light-heavyweight king and a man recently nominated as Fighter of the Decade.

Yet Calzaghe is unworried: "I have no fear whatsoever of Jones... I would jump on the next plane to the States and defend my title against him in his own backyard if the opportunity arose," he said.

Calzaghe's comments came after Jones hinted he may step down a weight for his next fight, following a disappointing display against Eric Harding.

Jones' eleventh-round victory in that fight took his record to 43-1, including 35 knock-outs.

Many experts still regard Jones as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world, but Calzaghe may sense that he has the chance of a victory that would put his name on the lips of the boxing world.

                Fighting talk

The undefeated Calzaghe was certainly talking the language that fight promoters like to hear:

"I am the best super-middleweight in the world and I am out to prove that I am the best fighter on the planet. If Jones disagrees, lets get it on," he said.

"Jones is supposed to be the best fighter in the world at the moment. A showdown between us has got to happen to prove who is the best."

Calzaghe looked to be back to his best after destroying the highly rated American challenger Omar Sheika in the fifth round of a thrilling fight at the Wembley Conference Centre in August.

It was possibly his best performance since he claimed the title in a magnificent encounter with Chris Eubank. Since that fight his work has been disappointing, though this could be blamed on a series of hand injuries that have disrupted his preparations.

"The Sheika fight was the turning point for me," said Calzaghe.

"He was a dangerous fighter and he brought out the best in me. I believe against Jones, who is leagues above Sheika, you will see the best of Joe Calzaghe."

Frank Warren, Calzaghe's promoter, is trying to finalise a deal with Jones' promoter Murad Muhammed and is talking to the WBO to make the fight happen.

"Roy says he has difficulty in finding opponents but he has Joe Calzaghe - the best fighter in the division - waiting to fight him and ready to put his title on the line.

"I am close to making the fight happen and when it does we will see who is the best in the world," said Warren.

                  Jones considers Calzaghe fight

Joe Calzaghe has moved a step closer to his dream fight with Roy Jones junior after the American's agent, Brad Jacobs, confirmed that they were considering a match with the Welshman.

Undefeated WBO super middleweight champion Calzaghe, who destroyed number one challenger Mario Veit inside a round in Cardiff on Saturday, has long wanted to face Jones.

Calzaghe has also struggled to catch the interest of the American TV companies and a fight against Jones, regarded by many as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world at the moment, would certainly attract huge viewing figures.

"Roy and I have been talking about Joe for a while and more importantly we watched his fight this past weekend with Mario Veit," said Jacobs.

"He certainly looked terrific. Joe's a long-standing champion and he deserves all the accolades he's receiving.

"We're anxious to initiate talks about Roy potentially fighting Joe, maybe later in 2001."

                  Start talking

With Jones appearing willing to fight in the United Kingdom, the 73,000 capacity Millennium Stadium in Cardiff has been touted as a possible venue.

Jacobs said that Jones - who holds the IBF, WBC, WBA and IBO light heavyweight titles - would also be willing to drop down a weight to fight Calzaghe.

Such an arrangement would suit both fighters. Calzaghe could stay at the weight he is comfortable with, while Jones - a former IBF super middleweight champion - would not risk losing any of his light heavyweight belts.

"I fired off a fax to Frank Warren (Calzaghe's agent) earlier today asking him when he might be available to sit down and start talking about these matters," Jacobs added.

Jacobs admitted that, apart from WBO champion Dariusz Michalczewski, the light heavyweight division had run out of challenges.

The Jones camp would also consider a match with the fighter who emerges on top from the middleweight tussle between Bernard Hopkins, Felix Trinidad and William Joppy, although the bout would have to be at super middleweight.

yeah he wasn't obligated to move up but obviously he looked at the risk vs the reward right? Leave home and become a legend. Look at what Amir Khan is attempting to do. He understands that to become a legend he must do the unordinary. He could have stayed with Warren and made a bunch of worthless defenses and made millions even after having his block knocked off but I respect the man b/c he packed his bags and is attempting to do all that is nessesary to go down as a legend. Roy Jones went from middleweight champion to even becoming a heavyweight champion because that is what legends are capable of.
