that's part of the reason. The real major reason however is because of the added reach they get when throwing punches from a squared stance as opposed to a conventional boxing stance.

The reason that added reach is vital in their sport is because it is harder to defend even against punches with those little gloves that they have.

Try it the next time you're sparring in the gym. In boxing we're used to covering up a certain way when an opponent is throwing combos to minimize damage.

But you take the gloves off and you'd be shocked at how ineffective the exact same defense would be and how many punches get through.

MMA fighters hook up with Freddie cause they know he can help them improve their hands, footwork, head movement, etc. I can't recall any boxers talking **** about the sport of boxing. I know MMA fighters calling out certain boxers in an MMA match.

Usually the people who follow MMA and talk **** about boxing and vice versa have no real knowledge or experience in either sport. That's why they bad mouth each sport. It's a shame cause both sports of entertaining if you just put the time to learn about the other sport.

You actually have more reach on your punches from a boxing stance, especially the jab. You're right it is harder to defend the punches in MMA cause of the size of the glove. I personally started off with MMA about 5 years ago and made the transition to Boxing a year ago.

You cant block punches as well with MMA gloves but the head movement and footwork will help you dodge a lot, the only downfall is getting single legged or kicked in that boxing stance. Guys like Anderson Silva and BJ Penn can get away with using a boxing stance cause there BJJ is World Class and they both got solid Muay Thai. But if you're a pure boxer then you might be in trouble. I personally prefer the boxing stance though.

it is a preference thing. But i was trying to explain to the TS that the reason alot of mma fighters adopt a square stance is because of how hard it is to defend against combinations. from a square stance they get more reach and in turn a split second bigger window to react and evade punches as opposed to blocking which most of the time does not end well for a fighter in mma.

I would have to disagree. I have a lot more experience in MMA then I do Boxing, but with a boxing stance you can slip, weave and block punches a LOT better then the squared MMA stance. If you're talking about combinations involving kicks and fighting within the clinch using elbows/knees that yes I do agree, the squared stance is better.

From a distance moving in and out, then hands down the Boxing stance does you wonders. I personally prefer the Boxing stance just cause you cant block every punch with those tiny gloves. You're chances are better if you slip or weave. I guess you got to pick the right stance in certain situations.

I know this is a different example, but Masato Kobayashi who is one of the K-1 all time greats happens to use a Boxing stance in Kick Boxing/Muay Thai and does REALLY well but when he fights close within the clinch he gets tagged a lot cause of his Boxing stance but has superior footwork compared to the other Kick Boxers cause of his Boxing.
