Just curious, because I hear that win brought up a lot.
I think it's more apt to consider that later on his career, when he had declined, Johnson smoked Roy Jones, beat a prime Antonio Tarver, gave Chad Dawson hell, beat a host of good fighers like Woods, Judah and Mack......Not long after Hop beat him he also got robbed in a defeat to Sven Ottke. Johnson was a top fighter, in tiptop condition, when he fought BHop and he got owned, it's an extremely impressive victory, especially when you look at the manner of it. Johnson's very underrated, he got screwed out of decisions for like half a decade or something

Johnson matured into a very good fighter later in his career.

The problem when he faced Hopkins is, Glenn had inflated his record with tomato cans. Which won't prepare you in any way whatsoever for someone like Bernard.

No one gives the guy who beat Hopkins in his first fight any credit, as it should be. Likewise no one should give Bernard much credit for beating an extremely green Johson, just because he had been fed a steady diet of stiffs.

Hardly fair to compare a professional debutante in Hopkins with a 30-0 Glen, when talking about 'green-ness'.

That's like saying Jones doesn't deserve much credit for beating Hop. You can always say a fighter's green until they fight a top-level or elite fighter, but that'd be pretty naive, IMO. Johnson was in the prime of his youth in that bout, he actually fought well, he just got bamboozled, Hopkins' set a fierce workrate.

that fight should have been a draw, if reid threw more punches he would have won.

prime roy against prime calzaghe would be a very different fight. i think roy would get a UD or maybe SD because his punches would look better to the judges.

hopkins i don't know, the young hops that beat glen johnson could beat calzaghe but i could also see calzaghe winning. everybody that gets in the ring with joe finds out the hard way that there's nobody that fights like him. if hops used a slick counterpunching style like reid did, which is sort of like prime hops, he could get a decision on calzaghe. hopkins would be able to outbox calzaghe but joe has a way of kicking it up to another gear when he gets pissed off.

30 stiffs is 30 stiffs. Hardly prepares you for world class competition, now does it?

The reason Jones gets credit for beating Bhop, is that they were both fairly green at the time. Also both had been in with much better competition that Johnson when he fought Hopkins.

So we give Hop no credit whatsoever because Johnson hadn't fought world-class operators yet? Hmm, I guess by that logic the beating against Hop taught him all he needed to know since he proceeded to get screwed against the likes of Ottke, Branco etc following that fight.

              • ottke would win a wide split decision against all 3 of them.

This thread is ridiculous. More whiny **** from Americans about their "hero's" getting smoked by foreigners.

Its the same **** people do w/ Klitschko threads.

"Oh god, the era of American boxing domination is over, lets grasp at straws and make excuses as to why we get our asses kicked."

Whats worse is that it comes from an effeminate Irish kid who gargles Mayweather balls.

                    Pathetic ****.
                    Let me ask.

Can you show me a video of a Prime Calzaghe againest a fighter whos close to the level of a prime Jones or Hopkins?? I mean you sound so sure, id like to see you back it up.

Oh wait, but let me guess you hate on Mayweather?

Mayweather's resume is faaarrr better than both Klitschko's or Joe.

                      Pathetic racist.

HOPKINS and Roy would eliminate Calzaghe from being discussed.
