  • Bernard Hopkins: who has he ducked?

Im interested in the fighters that Hopkins has ducked, links would also be appreciated.

Off the Top of my Head he has ducked Calzaghe in the early 2000's and Chad Dawson.

The fight almost went down in 2004, and there was a $2.5 million offer on the table to Hopkins, who rejected it. Calzaghe and Warren scrambled to plug in a foe for the date saved for Hopkins, and Calzaghe wound up downing Armenian Mger Mrktchian (TKO7) and giving the Hopkins romance a rest. Calzaghe and Hopkins had been flirting for much of 2002, and 2003 too, so this ‘all flirt-no eff farce has been unfolding for a looong spell.

            Brian Barboza

Hopkins ducked Barboza early in his reign after Barboza kicked the **** out of Robert Allen. Allen, at that time, was dangerous and Bhop wanted no part of Barboza at that time. That was around the same time (1996-1997) when Hopkins fought Allen the 1st time and was getting smacked and roughed up badly when ref Mills Lane shoved Hopkins during a beak and Hopkins fell out of the ring and feigned an ankle injury to avoid stepping back in with Allen, thus retaining his title via no contest.

And when he fought Syd Vanderpool in 2000, he made Syd weigh in on the day of the fight when NO ONE was doing things that way. It deprived Vanderpool the chance to hydrate properly the night before the fight.

I'll say this, Hopkins is a better boxing manager (for himself) than he is a fighter. He made all the choices at the right time. Sheer genius.

RJJ rematch...but pretty much used his hole "middleweight defenses" as a coy to take the limelight off him ever moving up in weight and challenging other fighters.

He priced himself out of a rematch with Jones, I think Jones did try to make that fight as well.

Now, with respect to Hopkins, Roy did make a good faith effort in trying to make that fight happen. It didn't happen I guess because Bernard's number was too high. But I didn't think that the Jirov fight was going to happen and again, where it comes to Roy Jones, I want to see the deal signed before I go out and start promoting a fight."
