Comments Thread For: Khan vs Marquez on May 15, Then Judah, Mayweather

What make Khan think Khan vs. Mayweather would be a "superfight"? I hope he is kidding. Unless he improves dramatically over the next several months or so, all I see that fight being is a super mismatch. Hell, it would still be a mismatch no matter how good Khan becomes. I think he's just throwing Mayweather's name around to get attention in the US.Comment

He'll vacate. And he's hoping Maidana will lose to someone else down the line and go out of the picture, like Prescott did.Comment

Khan is faster, younger, bigger, and a hell of a lot fresher and his peak prime years. Marquez will lose this fight. He's just too old and fighting too far above where his body would still be good enough. Khan is bigger than Mayweather, but is still able to shrink down to 140 still and you all saw the size difference between those two. It was like a midget fighting The Hulk.
Nah, I reckon they are being very smart. Marquez is still good enough to be considered at the top of the sport after beating Diaz and then losing to Mayweather, which was a foregone conclusion anyway, but this is good match-making. I think the Mayweather fight will have taken a lot of that last ounce of fighting spirit that kept him coming in and fighting like a mad mutha-****er even though he was 36. By the time this gets done he will be a lot closer to forty, fighting a dude nearly fifteen years younger and twice his size.
I don't like this fight for Marquez. If it does happen, I hope he is getting squillions for it. Man, Marquez is a beast. Just fights anyone.Comment

Judah has the boxing gods on his shoulders.
This guy could lose to man who won a prize to fight him on a back of a cereal box and still get offered big fights and paychecks.Comment

They are being cynical, not smart, IMO, and it's cynical match-making. Khan will look good against Marquez (as he did against Barrera, another small, once-great fighter). But only the gullible will think it means anything. And real boxing fans will never forgive Khan for ducking Maidana. If he'd fought and beaten Maidana that would have done far more for his credibility in the long term - and therefore done more for his long term star power. But bottom line, GBP and Roach clearly think it's too risky. Fighters who vacate their titles in order to avoid anyone they consider to be risky deserve no respect.
If the Marquez fight had been made on the basis that Maidana would have a guaranteed crack at the winner, I wouldn't have had a problem with it; but GBP have made it clear that they have no plans for Khan to fight Maidana at all, and that if he beats Marquez they want him to fight Zab next. So it's a blatant duck, pure and simple.
It's also very cynical of them to match a once great fighter like Marquez who still has the ability to beat many top fighters, against someone whose style is all wrong for him at his age and given his size. GBP clearly don't have Marquez's interests at heart. I know he's an adult who should be able to make his own decisions, but he has a track record for making bad career decisions, and I get the impression that GBP put pressure on him to take this fight.Last edited by Dave Rado; 02-02-2010, 09:46 AM.Comment
