it differs in each case. some fighters are hyped and others just fell of.
lacy and baldomir where never good to begin with. baldomir fought a finished gatti who was never all that good to begin with, and judah who hadnt even trained for the fight. lacy doesnt have a single impressiove win in his entire career. baldomir got lucky and lacy was all hype. neighter is a impressive win, mercado was a pretty good fighter though, and considering hopkins fought him in his backyard the first time around, got of the canvas twice to rally back and get a draw, and in the second fight dominate him.. i think both those performances are impressive. i think mercado was a good fighter who just never made it. again baldomir was just lucky and lacy was just hyped up trash. i mean those guys got chances since and never did ****, mercado just didnt get much of a chance.Comment

What a well thought-out post and one I agree with 100%. Nevertheless, I think your two examples are kind've bad given how overrated both of those wins are. But your premise is so correct. Kudos.I watched Hopkins vs Mercado I&II earlier and it got me thinking about resumes. Back in the day, a win over "a Mercado" would have been seen as good; the highest ranking contender, solid fighter - excellent. Nowadays, people only rate the wins against elite competition that will stand up to scrutiny after a period of time, e.g.
The Calzaghe win over Lacy and the Mayweather win over Baldomir. At the time they were both lauded as opponents, now they're widely discredited.
Has the average fan descended so far? It appears every win is now examined far more than beforehand and merely "good" wins are quickly dismissed if the opponent is not at least a HOFer.
