I never thought I'd be posting a thread like this - Hell, at least not sincerely - but I really felt for Johnny last night.
He lost his title for the second time to a former middleweight, but God bless 'im, he genuinely tried last night. He really did, and even gave us a halfway watchable fight.
What's more, while he's continually mocked by fans of boxing (shame on them!
) and isn't respected by his peers, you can see it really mattered to him. This guy even had Jim Lampley advising him (with Larry Merchant hilariously cited as "otherwise committed") on how to win over the crowds.
All credit must go to the referee for working so well and encouraging John into fighting positively, but you get the feeling that, despite Stoney, John is a genuinely nice guy who just didn't have what it takes to win over crowds. And now he's lost everything he had to a guy who slated him at their press conference. That poor guy must be feeling low.
So did he earn your respect last night?
