This is a source of genuine debate (and I tend to agree with you...no Year 0 and all). In boxing terms though, decades have always gone 0-9; that's why all the "Fighter of the 90s" award came out in 99.

As to fight, Castillo-Corrales was contested at a higher level, for higher stakes, that Gatti-Ward I.

Good choice! Too bad no more wars just SuperHypes, Lames, Catchweights, Cheaters & the Floyd/Pac Saga ( which may never end ) ..

Tbh, wat put me off a bit was that there was a bit too much fighting on the inside for my liking, but hey thats justs me. Still a great fight though.
That or Ward v Gatti 1. Imo, the 3 are pretty much tied for 1st.

I agree with you. But as Cliff noted, history has always been viewed in 10's, beginning with ###0 (Fighter of the 90's, Best Movie of the 80's, Life in the 60's, etc.) . Top Ten Of the '00's/Noughties/Double 0's/etc felt dumb to write. I tried to reference "Past ten years" as often as possible, but settled for decade in certain spots, under the realization that a reasonable semantics would surface.

Thanks for the props on the article. Much appreciated.

Lopez-Alvarez II was '98 (both of their fights were in '98, in fact).

Arce-Hussein I was great as it unfolded due to the threat of Arce suffering a cuts-stoppage, but the bout was fairly one-sided IMO.

Morales-Chi was nice, but there's only so many fights that can be listed before the Honorable Mention secition is overflowing and longer than the main piece.

Was a great slugfest, no doubt. I don't take issue with anyone who argues it was better than some of the HM choices. Our voting for Top 10 was based on FOTY's by the Ring, BWAA and USA Today. From there, we tried to recall as many classics as possible for the "best of the rest" section.

I really wanted to add this one. But as explained above, I limited the overall count to 30 or so bouts. My only issue w/ Oscar-Shane was that while scoring wise it was close, it was almost two separate fights - all Oscar in the first half, all Shane in the second half. Not a lot of ebb and flow, nothing like most of the others on the list.

It was for that reason that I almost left off Margarito-Cotto, but that had enough action, blood and violence to make the cut, IMO.

Glad to see the Letterlough - J. Gonzales fight mentioned here...That was one of those unimaginable "back and forths" seen by only the hard-core fans. Looking back on this decade, I have to give props to ESPN - they're doing The Lord's work when it comes to the sport of boxing.

                What about Freitas-Barrios ?
Very close fight, both guys hurt and down twice and a miracle puch at the bell rang that turned the fight.

lots of great fights there, definitely disagree with the order of of some of the fights. I was a big taylor and pavlik fan at the time of their first fight, but i would not have it in the top ten. atleast not over marg vs cotto and a couple others that didn't even make the "also considered". Was a great fight though.

Nice job on the article Jake.

                      One problem here.

Morales/Barrera 3 was not better than Gatti-Ward. No way, no how. I'm a huge Morales fan and I don't even agree with that.

Morales/Barrera 3 was overrated and much of the excitement in my mind was built off of the other fights. It was a very good fight, but certainly no Gatti-Ward.
