  • Comments Thread For: Katsidis Is the Fight Marquez – And Lightweight - Needs

By Jake Donovan - There are plenty of reasons to beat up on the alphabet organizations, but there comes a moment every so often where even their harshest critics should simply shut up and offer temporary support.

Efforts to keep things moving in the lightweight division would mark such an occasion.

From the moment it became obvious that Juan Manuel Marquez wasn’t going to secure a third fight with longtime rival Manny Pacquiao any time soon, the next move should’ve been a no-brainer: drop back down to the division that calls you champion.

One of the sanctioning bodies that currently recognizes the future Hall of Famer as their champion (in addition to his more significant claim as the lineal lightweight crown) has ordered a mandatory defense against all-action Australian ****er Michael Katsidis.

This is the part where everyone shuts up, ignores the messenger and embraces the message. [Click Here To Read More]

Let's see it, Katsidis is like a smaller Ricky Hatton.... Could be an interesting fight!!!!

From JMM's point of view I don't think this makes sense. He might only have a couple of fights left in him. It doesn't make sense for one of them to be against a guy that will probably put some damage on him and won't add anything to his legacy. In my opinion they should just crown Katsidis full champ and he should try to unify the titles. JMM should try to win a belt at 140 and if PAC is down a third fight to end his career. Those are the only two paths that make sense from a legacy and money stand point. He can become the first Mexican with titles at 4 weight classes and end the trilogy with Manny, Marquez payed his dues he should be able to bow out on his own terms.

Nah. Marquez may have his best days behind him, but he would still light Katsidis up and knock him out. Katsidis comes right at you, Marquez murders people who come right at him.

            Good article.

Think of it like this, fellas - Marquez is the king at 135, but likely wants big paydays at 140 to round off his career. But before he does that, why not take this fight (which we all know will be great; possibly even better than Marquez-Diaz, since both have legit KO power this time) as a sort of passing of the torch?

Katsidis has a chance to beat him and thus become the new king at 135... but Marquez could also end up successfully defending his title, which would allow him to bow out of the division with dignity whilst still at the top.

Doesn't that make the most sense? I mean, come on - Hatton is in no state to fight now (or possibly ever again), and Pacquiao's plans will likely never involve Marquez for a third time. This match-up has FOTY written all over it, and we all know both of these guys love to put on a show for the boxing fans.

JMM is probably counting his remaining fights with the less than the fingers on one hand. I would think he is interested in his future financial capacity now more than ever. The problem is he was soundly beaten the last time he fought and in this business your last fight counts a whole lot, so he may have to re establish himself again.

Was it age or the weight or both that caused his bad showing against Floyd? I think Katsidis might be his best option now at 135.

It doesn't look like Hatton's coming back anytime soon. He should stick to 135, for now, and fight Katsidis.
