we can also say that journeymen fighters are the
backbone of the sport.. ALL prospects & Contenders
need them more than journeymen fighters need them.

This thread is an excellent reminder to most that journeymen are journeymen, unless they are able to fight well enough to get out of journeymen status. Journeymen don't just become championship quality fighters. It's hard for a journeyman to fight his way into contention of championship quality fighting, but it's possible.

At the same time, most journeymen don't become championship quality fighters. It's a difficult road, and most fighters don't make it.

On the other hand, champions usually get out before they fade into journeyman status, but some do. Some champions stay in the sport long enough to become journeymen, but it happens less often than the fighters who don't fade into journeymen status.

My point is... anything can happen.

        Excellent point.

Some journeymen have been better than other journeymen and have gone from journeymen to being champion. Case in point: Sammy Fuentes and Freddie Pendleton. Both were journeymen who were better than the champions they fought because they beat them and then became champions.

They went from journeymen to champions to journeymen and not many journeymen can do that. Usually journeymen stay in that status because they are not as good as the champions although maybe if some trained harder they would be.

Most champions don't go from being journeymen to champions though. They often do go from being champions to journeymen, which is the opposite of journeymen to champion, by the end of their career as they are not as good as they once were.

I don't believe you can be both at the same time though. That would not be possible.

Journeymen are really good but just not quite good enough to be the very best a master if you will. Now in this day and age of boxing a journeymen can win a strap especially if matched up smartly (and some would say properly) but when comming up against a true master they will always fall short and will fall short against other journeymen in some cases.

Journeymen is a pretty vast level in boxing, average fighters can get up to journeyman status but going from journeymen to master is a huge leap and in a sport as damaging as boxing it is hard to have enough time in a career to really do that.

This is true, because losing to journeymen, or gatekeeprs is a measure of where you are mentally and physically as a fighter.

Some journeymen become champions (Glenn Johnson, Carlos Baldomir)
Some champions become journyemen (Carl Daniels, DeMarcus Corley)

Many of them work really hard. They deserve our respect as fans because they go through more hardships than the champions we worship, but when all is said and done they are back in the ring and the gym the next day.
