Long-time trainer of Mikkel Kessler gets the axe.

Mikkel Kessler's trainer since he was an early teen Ricard Olsen, was today told that he shouldn't train the viking warrior for his upcoming all-important showdown with Carl Froch.

Olsen on the left arrives in Denmark after the Ward defeat.

Olsen says that he's disapointed that he wasn't in on the decision but also says that he has trained Mikkel for so long that Kessler could piss on his back and Olsen couldn't be mad.

Olsen further says that it's impossible to train Kessler: "He never listens to what I have to say and you cannot give him any demands. Besides he's always injured. He's impossible to train."

New trainer will be american Jimmy Montoya who co-trained the dane along with Olsen before Sartison and Haussler.

    Not a bad move, IMO.

        hahaha!

but i guess...but i mean man...carl froch? he could have just slowly thrown a tennis ball at him from short range and told him to dodge it and he'd be ready for froch's flat footed ass...

I think it's pretty clear that changes had to be made. Wheter Montoya or someone else is the correct choice as trainer is difficult to see from the outside.

In many ways the Froch fight is the most important for Kessler ever. This fight will prove if he has anything left of the swagger he had pre Calzaghe. Now it's Jimmy Montoya who has to steer Kessler in the right direction. Ricard Olsen has just said that he's glad it isn't him!

i don't know too much about olsen but from what iv seen i dont think hes someone you want in your corner if you're losing a fight. he rarely gave any good advice in the corner when kess was losing to calzaghe and to ward, he didn't see the faults his fighter was making until too late and you wonder if he could formulate a good gameplan against an elite level fighter.

however he clearly did some good as mikkel is a top 5 SMW and could still beat alot of top level guys out there. personally i think mikkel needs someone like manny steward in his corner.

right now part of me wonders if mikkel is too old to change, at 30 years old can he change the habits of a lifetime?

Manny Steward made Wlad practically invincible yet more boring. I guess there's a time when changes are needed and if ever there was a need as far as Kessler goes it's now. He needs a trainer with more authority and someone who can adjust a gameplan in the heat of battle. It looks like Kessler has taken it to easy in training and twice he has failed in making sufficient in-fight adjustments.

I dont know if Montoya is the man to take care of this. It'll be his big exam as well. If Kessler wins he'll get a ton of credit.

At the same time, Ricard told us that if Kessler demands him to come back he will. Hiring Montoya will not make any difference in my opinion.

I think this incident shows that Kessler has missed someone to push him harder in the gym. I don't think he can ever go back to Olsen again, but they will likely always have a friendly relationship.
