And as anyone who’s consistently read my stuff can tell you, I’m a Floyd Mayweather Jr. guy.

In 30-plus years as a fan, he’s as good as I’ve seen. And though his personal brand of ****iness tends to rub people the wrong way, I sort of like it. For the same reasons I liked Deion Sanders when he was picking off passes and high-stepping for the 49ers and Cowboys, I suppose.

He was the best in the business and he didn’t mind telling you.

In an activity like boxing – or football, in Deion’s case – where the guys with the big mouths have to stand within arm’s length of the guys they trash, I say let them talk. The ones who are good quickly earn the right to keep talking. And the ones who are nothing but talk quickly vanish.

But my fandom doesn’t take away my credibility as a journalist, as 21 years of bosses would tell you. Nor does it mean I won’t take “Money” to task when it’s warranted, as my call for him to be DQ’d after the in-ring theatrics with Zab Judah a few years back clearly indicates.

What it does tend to mean is whenever an item involving Mayweather arises, people assume I’ll take his side. And if I do indeed see things his way, they assume any argument I might make – no matter how logical in nature – is driven by that favoritism rather than fact.

It’s nonsense. But it’s predictable.

So, even as I write this on a chilly Monday morning in Gainesville, I expect follow-up commentary on boards and inboxes to lean toward the “you’re a nuthugger/why do you have a job” norms of the past. Sugar Ray Robinson is the Greatest Boxer the World has ever seen, according to fight fans worldwide. Muhammad Ali was voted as the Greatest Ever Heavyweight of all time, just beating Mike Tyson. Manny Pacquiao gathered the second highest number of votes in winning the Featherweight category, polling more than 50% of the vote.

Fans worldwide have been voting for their Greatest Ever fighters in the eight traditional weight categories of Flyweight, Bantamweight, Featherweight, Lightweight, Welterweight, Middleweight, Light Heavyweight and Heavyweight. The nominated fighters were selected by a jury of boxing analysts - Al Bernstein, Tom Hauser, Ron Borges, Jean-Philippe Lustyk and Colin Hart. The article was written well...Mayweather Jr is right. Its an even test and both men have to do it. Time for Pac to step up to the table.

Yah. It's fair for both of them. How about for the rest of the boxers out there? Apply the law to everyone or don't apply it at all !!! They should try to petition to NSAC first to amend their requirements for the anti-doping and not circumvent it.

hmm..Floyd fought the same two fighters that (you list) Pacquiao fought..Only when Floyd faced DLH he wasnt a drained shell of himself..or a previously KOd Hatton..but I agree with you..beating Marquez is not greatness..beating Marquez was just a tune-up for the Pacquiao fight..greatness is beating an undefeated, had never been knocked down Chico Corrales..(who you happen to have as one of your favorite boxers of all-times)..thats greatness.

And also, why hasn't anyone complained about how insufficient the NSAC was at testing until now? Now that Floyd wants to do blood testing (which the Olympics do simply because blood can be kept for years, urine can't) it's like RANDOM BLOOD TESTING OR BUST! Nothing else is sufficient enough!

Actually you can also preserve urine by freezing it. It has been done before in 1999 Tour de France and re-tested last 2008.

IMO..Pac isnt great, but entertaining..I guess he have opposite views of greatness.

I'm just curious here. Hypothetically speaking, if Pacman can defeat Mayweather on March 13, would you change your view about Pacman also? I understand we all have our own opinion about who really is greater between the two but it would be more credible if we support it with factual basis and not just speculation. Mayweather is a good boxer while Pacman is an exciting fighter. I say Mayweather is a good boxer, perfected the essence of sweet science but he is not as exciting as Pacman in demolishing is opponents inside the ring. You can also better appreciate Pacman by being always humble despite his exemplary accomplishments. Mayweather on the other hand is a master tactician. He explores his opponents weakness and uses it to his advantage. He's not as exciting as Pacman because all he has are powerpuff punches. In addition, he's very boastful. His ego is way way too big which miniscules his accomplishments.

Let's go down to more details. I believe Mayweather, despite having a monster speed, would have some problem facing Pacman. Evident is his difficulty in winning against Judah (also a southpaw). If Mayweather can contain Pacman's volume punching and moves a lot, then i think Mayweather can defeat Pacman via 12 round unanimous decision. However, Mayweather is an easy target for Pacman if Pacman can find a way to always pin down Mayweather in the corner, attacking from Mayweather's right side, then Pacman's chances of knocking him down is very high indeed.
