Langford would've been in for a real rough night if he'd gotten a title shot against Dempsey. Dempsey has said he had fear of Langford, but still, by the time he was champ, Sam's eyesight was horrible.

I'd say the most glaring omission from Dempsey's resume is Harry Wills. I don't necessarily blame Dempsey for the fight not happening as he did sign to fight Wills but Tex Rickard cancelled it. Wills still got a nice payday when the fight was cancelled. But Wills was fighting a ton of tough fighters frequently while Dempsey could fight like once a year and make movies and whatnot. He fought Langford like 20 times.

Also, Harry Greb is said to have handed Dempsey's ass frequently during sparring.

But Dempsey's handlers weren't about to let him fight Greb.

I actually believe with the gloves they used brain damage was less likely as their hands would bust first...

The way they could stand over them and hammer them back down was brutal though, you'd have to be mean-as to fight those days..

Yeah his title run was dissapointing but he hardly was an inactive fighter. He had close to 90 pro fights. Him and Liston are similar in that manner, alot of their resume/legacy was built in their lead up to becoming champ more than their reign itself.

The Wills thing is overstated alot of times. I actually have a pic of Dempsey sitting at a table with Wills signing a contract, it was Rickard.

A Greb fight would have been nice and Harry beat almost all the same opponents some even before Jack fought them.

Jack Johnson ducked Langford, Mcvey, Jeanette once he became champ too. People labelling Dempsey racist cuz the Wills fight never came off seems to be jumping the gun.

Agreed lol hence his other nickname "the mankiller"

I don't think Tunney was a much better fighter he just had Jack's number thanks to his style and Gene is definitely criminally underrated and largely ignored by folks now-a-days.

And it was Dempsey who came up with the neutral corner rule, 1st used in the Tunney rematch, one of the reasons the Long Count happened.

Dempsey was a bad dude, for sure. No wonder why he was Mike Tyson's favorite fighter.
