He obviously learned the basics, (hook, jab, uppercut) every boxer does. The problem was the reliance on twitchy reflexes instead of honing defensive skills like the shoulder role etc...

Also fighting a tactical fight was out of the picture in his prime because Jones jr. knew that his talent could be used to the full potential in every fight(hands behind back knock out), rather than being suppresed by aplying technical skills in the ring.

His lack of skill set really showed up when he fought tarver for the first time. The reason for this is his reflexes, legs and power had already diminished after the 20 Ib weight loss. Now the debate here is whether the muslcle loss caused the decline in natural talent.

A good comparison would be to floyd mayweather jr. We know they both have talent, but look where floyd mayweather jr. is in 2009 and compare this where Jones jr. is in 2009.

No it isn't. Have you read the title?

You can bring in hopkins, but do not make this into a hopkins vs Jones thread.

That's interesting. BTW, I'm of the opinion that Floyd is slipping. Like Jones, it isn't very noticeable because he's so much more talented than his opposition but it will come to light soon. I remember watching Jones against Ruiz and being flabbergasted at how much slower he was. I see a little more hesitancy in Floyd as well.

Im confused? Floyd is 32, and has had no weight loss situations to compare to that of Roy. Roy is one month shy of 41.

Roy at 32 was still running LHW. He was about 44-1, at 32..

Jones looks dreadful in that picture.

I thought it was expected to be slower after putting on 20lbs of muscle though... Surely you aren't going to be as quick as you would be 20lbs lighter..

That's what weight loss did to him, he looked like death and still won against the #1 LHW in the division.
