I agree. Which is why the idea of him going back to LHW was just insane. But even before the move down he was slowing. Remember Clinton Woods? Julio Gonzalez? Derrick Harmon? A slowing fighter is like a car that's aging, you can see the signs when it takes longer to get the parts going.

It does, Woods came out looking very game in the beginning. But in that fight it was his legs that were noticeable. Normally he would of gotten out of the way and circled, but he just went to the ropes.

And Gonzalez, was just a very good fighter IMO...

Yeah, round 12 of the Tarver fight, was one of my favourite Jones rounds. We really got a chance to see what he was made of. Shame he didnt retire afterwards.

Also Jones was against a lot of not so good fighters.

the perfect fight to retire on because he left it all in the ring after that...it was visibly obvious that jones was done after that...

Can you think of any boxers who retired at the right time? Off the top of my head: Hagler, Calzaghe, Lewis

hagler had lost a couple of steps but sugar ray came nowhere near putting a beatdown on him...calzaghe beat everybody he was supposed to beat and sealed the deal properly...

i think jones' and lewis' situation were similar...i thought lewis' exit was good because he was on the verge of getting his ass kicked by vitaly, knew he would get the beatdown in the rematch, and called it a career...the same writing was on the wall with roy, but he chose to ignore it...

Good post, I agree completely, Hagler looked over the hill in the Mugabe fight. On the other hand I wanted Lewis to fight Vitali and get koed, lol.

Roy just loves the sport and the competitiveness too much.

It's unfortunate, but he loves the limelight and putting on a show for his fans.

Unfortunately the shows have come to an end, although I thoroughly enjoyed the Lacy fight as meaningless as it was... I still loved it.
