it's kind of a catch 22 because cotto has been fighting tough fight after tough fight, but if he were to take on easy opponents then he would get no credit for anything. one thing i think at least in my opinion, that cotto has had a great career and has been in some serious wars, a little time off and some regrouping, and a new trainer and i think cotto will be in the top 3 of his weight class, at the A level.

i wasn't really a big cotto fan until the last few years, because he was being hyped up, but once i looked through all the fanboy ****, i noticed a class act in cotto and a true professional. i realized cotto is a asset to the sport and needs to be respected cause of that.

as far as arum and cotto's career being good or bad, i think it's a damned if you do, damned if you don't.

cotto can be back and come back good, he's a resilient fighter, with the right trainer, he can be world champ again, if he wants to?

He did a great job. He brought him along pretty slowly, upping the opponent just a tad each time and making sure to put in tune-up fights where needed. Cotto would have beat Margarito without the loaded gloves. Cotto-Pacquiao was a huge payday for both guys, and Cotto should have been undefeated going into it. Cotto could not have done more in his career than he did. It was a really strong career. He's no ATG, but he did a great job with what he had.

I'll watch the replay of Paul Williams' fight with Martinez on HBO boxing's 2009's best any day of the week before I watch Cotto's track performance against little Pac. Peace.

Cotto’s “track” performance made him an ass load of more money than the robbery Paul won against Martinez. Remember the topic of the thread was if you felt Bob Arum did a good job in promoting Cotto. Considering Cotto has sold out more fights then any of P. Williams performances I’d say Bob has done a good job what say you?

            Peace.

Oh props to Cotto for taking the fight, I just think his promoter should've advised him against it, especially with much better paying possible match ups against Floyd or DLH waiting in the wings. In the DLH case, more winnable as well.

I see what you’re saying and I can’t knock you for it, the thing is Bob would have made so much more money with two of his own top stable fighters in Cotto/Margarito then having to split any of the percentages of the earnings to another promoter.

The stage was set for these two fighters to meet and I agree Gomez wasn’t a good choice, but if some no name ****er were to come along and knock Cotto’s block off (it almost happened with Torres) then the Cotto/Margarito fight would have been shot down quick. There was too much money to be made.

                Peace.

This may sound like I'm bringing race into this, but black boxers don't have the kind of fan bases that Latino fighters do. Look at Arreola. He doesn't have half the talent that Paul Williams does, and he's a Goosen promoted fighter with a fan base. The Puerto Ricans just flocked to Cotto because they saw him on HBO knocking out C level opponents and thought he could go further, but they were wrong just like the Mexicans are with Arreola. Cotto's amateur career is another thing that helped his Puerto Rican fan base. Williams didn't have that luxury.

Nah not competitive at all. Prime Cotto beats the De La Hoya Pacquiao beat even worse and KO's him with a body shot before the 11th round. Both in their prime it would have been something special.
