Former UFC lightweight Din Thomas will welcome former boxing champion Ricardo Mayorga to the world of mixed martial arts when the two clash at the upcoming third event from the Shine Fights promotion, which is expected to go down in March 2010 at a venue to be named.

MMAmania.com confirmed the match-up earlier today.

"Dinyero" was a top contender in the stacked UFC 155-pound division prior to back-to-back losses to Kenny Florian (because he blew out his knee during the fight) and Josh Neer. Following that, Thomas announced his desire to compete at 145 pounds.

    He never got the chance.

Thomas was given his pink slip in May 2008 along with Travis Lutter, David Heath, Kalib Starnes, Joe Doerksen and John Halverson. Since then, he scored a submission win (triangle choke) over Dustin Pierkin at Headhunter Productions "The Patriot Act" back in February followed by a TKO victory (knee) over Gabe Lemley at "March Badness" just over a month later.

Affliction MMA quickly scooped him up for their August "Trilogy" event, but we all know how that turned out.

Still, the 32-fight veteran can get back into the headlines with a big win over the boxing bad boy. In addition to his run as WBA/WBC welterweight champion and WBC junior middleweight champion, the 28-7-1 pugilist was equally famous for his colorful personality.

We know he can punch -- and take a punch -- but will he have anything to offer Thomas on the ground? You can bet the Nicaraguan has no intentions of letting it get there.
This is lame.......either the MMA kat is going to get KTFO or Mayorga is gonna get submited........Im leaning towards Mayorga getting submitted in a boring ass fight......

It's more likely Din's going to clip his knees and then react from there.

defending against takedowns is something rather easy to learn compared to actual grappling. But if it does go to the floor, about 80% chance Mayorga loses.

One thing you can do is take a look at the percentage of KO% done by strikes to the head and body and there's your % for Mayorga's chances.

          ummmm....no.

You go up against someone whose worked on his shoot or on throws since he was a kid, you're only chance against that is someone whose sprawl was developed at the same time or something near immaculate.

Last I checked. there's no high ranked wrestling teams in FLA.

Unless you want to count the Sunkist Kids.

so you're saying its harder to learn how to defend against a take down than actual grappling and JJ?

That is grappling. to be able not only defend a takedown, but to use that defense to one's advantage. Even if we're talking about the basic shoot/sprawl, if you successfully sprawl, you still have to get it to your advantage before your opponent successfully corrects the situation to his advantage.

It's like chess. You need to know how to handle situations two or three move ahead on the fly even with something reflexive as the shoot.
