unfortunetly, Dempsey said publicly many times that he would never fight a black fighter.

But that was just the times man. Its easy to hold that against him now but if i were in his spot and of his race back then, id probably do the same thing.

He was willing to fight Harry Wills twice. And, Wills was a top African American HW at the time. One again his manager shut the idea down. And, then finally Dempsey and Wills had the 2nd fight signed and is going to happen in New York. But, the governor or mayor of New York or something like that. Refuse to let that happen and did not sanctioned it.

And, maybe he was willing to fight Wills cuz he felt that was a black fighter he could beat. I don't know. I do know that he straight out refused to fight Sam Langford. And, yes race probably had something to do with it. Cuz maybe he didn't want to lose to a black fighter. And, was only willing to fight black fighters that he could beat. I don't know. But, he was willing to fight Harry Wills.
