Should JMM be held to the same standards that Calzaghe is held to?

Geez, talk about stretching just to make a bash thread. How can you question JMM's desire to face the best? he chased after pac to the lightweight division in order to fight him a third time. he ktfo casamayor the lineal lightweight champ, then ktfo diaz (and possibly ruined him). he moved up two more divisions to face mayweather.

Marquez is coming off a loss so i dont see the problem with him fighting hatton in his first fight at jrww especially given the fact that he looked looked slow as hell at ww. Also, a victory over hatton would give him even more exposure and set the stage for another megafight like a third showdown with pac. But this fight hasnt even been signed, and hatton is the one who keeps mentioning marquez's name not the the other way around as you described.

To me, the only time a fighter shows that they are willing to face the best is when they don't expect to get paid the rainbow when doing it. Paul Williams and yeah, even Timothy Bradley are examples of guys like that. Glen Johnson is another one. The type of fighters you mentioned that you said that JMM has the desire to fight are star fighters. When you just go after brand names, that's not fighting the best. That's why Pacquiao gets bashed from some people too. He never fought Bradley either even though I think he would beat him.

Marquez has faced much tougher opposition than Calzaghe.

I am not denying that. He's just never pulled through when it truely mattered. John, Pac, and Floyd are fighters who make up a sick res. The problem is he didn't get the big W in those fights no matter how controversial the Pac and John fights were. And John is one fighter that JMM fought that was a dangerous guy with little marketability over in the US.

Calzaghe was the first person to legitamately beat Bernard Hopkins in the 2000's.

Calzaghe is a top 20 ATG.

But he has reached a point in his career of where he is just fighting for money it seems like now by calling out Hatton which is understandable.

The overall point of this thread though is to point out how his two marquee wins at 135 are starting to lose a lot of their luster. Diaz was never really that good to begin with as everybody saw when he lost to Campell. And then he goes on to gets beat tonight by a fighter who punches as soft as Ice La Fox's glossed lips. This is pretty much the same type of thing that Joe is getting bashed for with Kessler, Lacy, and to a certain degree RJJ.

And after how impressive Bradley fought tonight (and even I can't stand the fact that he doesn't have power to go with his talent) I think people should demand a JMM-Bradley fight if they care about JMM going out like a great fighter before his career is over with.
thats not true. Diaz hasn't put a lb on since moving up, at 135 he was generally the stronger man. At Lw he was very good. Marquez is also a FW.

When Marquez beat them they were significant and that all that matters.
Marquez was fighting at lightweight and they were the top guys in that division when he beat them

same thing with calzaghe, kessler and lacy were good wins at the time he beat them at super middle. lacy and kessler were the guys to beat in cal weightclass at the time.

the difference between jmm and cal in regards to their wins you compared is that Marquez was fighting these guys in his third and not best division.

but i guess what you are trying to get at is that marquez needs a better signature win now that j.diaz and casamayor arent doing so great?

a bradley win would be a great way for Marquez to cap off his career but i dont think he will effective enough at 140 to compete with bradley

People are making good points in this thread. Like saying that Calzaghe was in his comfort zone at the time he beat Kessler and Lacy where weight class is concerned and JMM had to move up in weight to fight those guys. That's why it's kind of depressing to see these guys struggle so badly. Casamayor went life and death with a scrub in his last fight and that was his first fight since JMM KOd him.
