It was the aborted rematch between Spinks and Eddie Mustafa Muhammad.

Stealer beat me too it.I believe the impetus behind it was money. A big money fight in the 70's got cancelled, I think it was Michael Spinks if memory serves me correctly, but anyways his opponent didn't make weight so the fight was off, costing the promoters millions of dollars.
I think medical reasons as well, with some ring deaths were rightfully or wrongfully attributed to rehydration issues during the time.
The commissions felt better safe than sorry, because they knew people would cut weight recklessly and endanger their health for some money.
It wasn't because the promoters lose millions because the same rules apply as before. What the weigh in does today is that it gives promoters better promotion, it's like an extra press conference, especially now when they're getting thousands to attend it and televised on Sportcenter.
It was supposedly for medical reason, but it's a double edged sword. Instead of fighters fighting in the divisions they belong, they fight wherever they can get down to, knowing that they'll have more than 24 hours to recuperate.Comment

They should be monitoring fighters weights for championship fights anyways.
I noticed a trend toward that for some fights in recent times.Comment

Likewise, I appreciate nice pics of Jarah Mariano.
It's interesting how the Mancini-Kim fight is cited as the beginning of the end for both 15 round fights and same day weigh-ins, while other monetary factors may have been much more of a reason why they ended.Stealer beat me too it.

Maybe they were just all contributing factors.Comment
