Weigh in's are a total joke!

These 1 day prior weigh ins are a joke.
take a look at the weekend fight between in funeka and guzman for example
    funeka 134 lb
    fight night 152!!
    guzman
    134.5 lb
    fight night 149 lb!

so we have 2 junior middleweights fight each other.
It's all smoke and mirrors , these guys are suppose to be lightweights, yet they are 3 divisions higher..
I'm not really in support of this.

It's much, MUCH worse in MMA.
Here is an example, Anthony "Rumble" Johnson, he fights at 170, but by fight night, he's close to 200lbs.

Haha, at least it isn't like Floyd's weigh in, 2 pounds over and pays for them.

This topic has been debated endlessly and even in the medical community it is debated because the results of having same day weigh ins versus day before weigh ins were controversial.

One argument goes the fighter needs adequate time to rehydrate, the argument against goes you have the possibility of one fighter being significantly bigger than the other with the advantage of an extra day.

If they would go back to same day weigh ins, I feel they should definitely do weigh ins 30, 14, and 7 days before the fight to make sure the fighter in question isn't losing too much weight too suddenly which could have disasterous consequences.

Right now, it's within the rules, so I can't argue with what somebody weighs fight night.
It's not cheating if you come in at 152 for a 135 weigh in the day before.
Until it is, or it's stipulated a max weight gain in the contract, fighters are always gonna do it if it benefits them.

that's why i always laugh when people call pacquiao a welterweight now.

pacquiao was 149 fight night against cotto. a lot of lightweights are that size fight night.

welterweights don't come in at slightly over 147. welterweights come in 160-165 fight night.

a lot of them are wrestlers.

wrestlers are use to cutting 20 lbs. or more.

ask anyone who has wrestled in high school or college.

Yeah and there's really no benefit to him coming in any bigger than 149, because his main asset, his speed, may be compromised.

I agree they are pointless to have 1 day before the fight. Why have them if most fighters cheat on the weight? Have it fight night or dont bother.

I believe the impetus behind it was money. A big money fight in the 70's got cancelled, I think it was Michael Spinks if memory serves me correctly, but anyways his opponent didn't make weight so the fight was off, costing the promoters millions of dollars.

I think medical reasons as well, with some ring deaths were rightfully or wrongfully attributed to rehydration issues during the time.

The commissions felt better safe than sorry, because they knew people would cut weight recklessly and endanger their health for some money.

They're not "cheating" on the weight, they're still following the rules. Cheating is what Jose Luis Castillo and his team did when his doctor put his foot under the scale to try to make 135.
