While he was on hiatus, that gave the UFC room to gain some traction because boxing didnt have any stars capable of filling his shoes. It created this myth that the UFC was taking boxings spot which was swiftly shot down when Mayweather made his return against Marquez. Top Rank and HBO deserve some credit too for using their hype machine to convince people who don't know a lot about the sport that Pacquiao is as good as they claim he is, but clearly Mayweather was the driving force behind boxing making it's comeback.

The timeline of when boxing started "dying" then made it's return fits Mayweathers retirement schedule to a tee. Being the great sportsman that he is, Floyd has never brought it up but the guy deserves credit for almost single handedly putting the spark back into the sport.

Pacquiao fighting Cotto, dela Hoya and Hatton would have happened with or without Mayweather. The Super Six tournament would have happened with or without Mayweather. When the economic crisis started and was at its peak, Mayweather was busy buying boats, while the likes of Pacquiao, Cotto, Margarito, Mosley, Marquez, Hopkins, and Pavlik were the ones keeping fans interested in boxing. If Mayweather stayed retired, he'd be no more as significant to boxing as Calzaghe is right now.

Yeah, I'm sure they hate Floyd so much that they would make up a story about it. I guess coincidently ESPN:

                      http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/box...ory?id=4495350

                      CBS:

                      http://www.cbssports.com/boxing/story/12248661/mayweather-agrees-to-pay-$56m-in-back-taxes-to-irs/rss

and LA Times all hate him too and decided to make up the same exact story:

                      http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/spor...l-marquez.html

Look, I never said he was broke, I said he needed money to pay off taxes. I just found it funny that in the 24/7 before the JMM fight, he said he didn't have any problems with the IRS but less than a week after the fight, he's writing them a check for $5.6 mil.Man, ya'll *****s are on some serious ****-ridin!
