Inside the Top Ten: The Welterweight Division

By Jake Donovan/Cliff Rold - It’s often referred to as the best division in boxing, which begs a question…

How often is Welterweight not the best division in boxing?

Certainly there are always strong periods elsewhere. For much of this decade, fans were treated to magnificent action around Featherweight and Lightweight. Even Light Heavyweight had a hot streak for a few years. [details]

I have my top 10 ww set up in almost the same order with the exception of quintana being#10 I think he deserves to be right under Clottey and Paul the Punisher should be in the mix somewhere in there

I pretty much agree with the list but have a hard time including Senchenko in the top 10. It's largely for the same reason I couldn't put the guy he beat for the alphabet belt, Nuzhnenko, in the top 10. From what I've seen, both have talent but they have built pretty records without fighting anybody. Nuzhnenko's best win was against the old Frenchman, Frederic Klose. And he drew at home against Irving Garcia. Senchenko's best wins were the largely untested Nuzhnenko and the same Klose, who was 38 at the time of their fight. I would probably put Aydin, Alvarez or Zab Judah ahead of Senchenko

So are they saying that Pacquiao-Floyd isn't for the lineal title. Good. It shouldn't be even though Floyd is #3 on Ring's rankings. I don't know what Ring's position is on it though. And neither Pacquiao or Floyd should be ranked over Mosley until they beat him.

                Welterweight, the deepest division.

I suggest that welterweight is the best divion in boxing mainly because the average man size is in that category, making probably more welterweight boxers than any other weight division.

If someone actually has the figures, it would be interesting to see.

Great point; never actually thought of it in terms of averages. Based on studies on human biology found on www.sciencedirect.com and www.pubmed.gov the average height of an adult man is about 5'6" - 5'9". The average weight of an adult male is 168–180 lbs. Given that boxers are athletes who train for minimum weight/maximum power, it seems logical that welter to middleweight would have the glut of participants/competitors and by extention more talent.

good post bro... thats pretty interesting and does make perfect sense... the more boxers available in a weight division, the higher the chances statistically that we will have more elite boxers than in any other category.. hence: a great division!
