Good example. I was talking about it's overall success, not just the gate. The gate is a fraction of the events total worth.

This past weekend's UFC 106 event drew 10,529 attendees to the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.

However, 3,898 tickets were COMPLIMENTARY and accounted for a staggering $2,331,250 worth of the $3,003,250 live gate (77.6 percent in all). In other words, the Nov. 21 event drew only 6,631 paid tickets worth $672,000.

UFC sucks & they have no names to carry the sport. All of their names are old and washed up...

GSP, Machida, Lesnar & Silva are their only stars......I respect their hustle but they cant **** with boxing

UFC has put some weak cards up and are paying the price.

I thought it was a decent event, but seriously how many people are going to buy tickets with a washed up Tito and Forrest griffin heading the card.

Same for MMA, except that boxing has 10x more events in general.

The initial post is wrong, they did a 3 million gate because tickets were overpriced since Brock was suppose to be in the main event.

So they really only managed to sell 7,000 (3k comped) tickets before Brock pulled out, and the fans got a dud PPV instead. 7k is pretty bad for the UFC in Las Vegas.

All three 2009 HBO PPVs also did better gates then ANY UFC IN HISTORY. Thats including UFC 100.

Thats the point, they shouldn't have put it on PPV. Lucky for them that they have such a gullible fanbase.

                Good article on the topic:

In a November showdown with the UFC in Las Vegas, boxing scored a knockout at the gate after the latest numbers from the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

UFC 106 last weekend featured Tito Ortiz vs. Forrest Griffin before an audience of 10,529 at Mandalay Bay for a $3 million gate. Of that total, however, 3,898 of those tickets were comps, or giveaways (valued at $2.3 million).

By comparison, Manny Pacquiao's 12th-round knockout of Miguel Cotto on Nov. 14 generated an $8.84 million gate with 15,470 tickets sold. No tickets were sold below face value for the bout and just 46 were comps.

Floyd Mayweather's Sept. 18 decision win against Juan Manuel Marquez wasn't quite the same caliber of fight as Pacquiao-Cotto, but it sold almost twice as many tickets at face value than UFC 106 and pulled in a $6.89 million gate.

Both boxing matches were at MGM Grand Garden Arena. Pacquiao's bout scored 1.25 million pay-per-view buys and Mayweather's 1 million, the Nos. 1 and 2 boxing PPV events of the 2009, according to official numbers released by HBO PPV in conjunction with promotional powers Top Rank and Golden Boy.

In a comparison of both sports' biggest shows of the year at the gate, Pacquiao-Cotto still easily outdistances UFC 100 held in July at Mandalay Bay. There were 9,793 paid attendees for a $5.1 million gate (second all-time for the organization), with the Brock Lesnar-Frank Mir heavyweight championship rematch headlining a stellar card.

UFC president Dana White has said that event sold 1.5 million on PPV, though the organization is a private company and doesn't release official numbers. There doesn't appear to be any unofficial figures from UFC 106 yet.

UFC 100 drew $312,800 in additional revenue from 6,256 fans who bought closed circuit tickets for the event in Las Vegas and New York.

By comparison, the closed circuit viewing parties for Pacquiao-Cotto in Las Vegas alone brought in $899,100 with more than 24,000 tickets sold.

The UFC is not doing that great and i think part of it is because of the bad cards they have been putting on but i think the trend is about over.I think everyone knew that mainstream fans or the trend followers were going to start abandoning the sport after a certain amount of time. The big question was how big there real fan base was going to be after the mainstream mma craze was over. This is just the start of the end of the mma trend and it looks like there real fan base is going to be way to small to keep the UFC alive.I predict that the UFC will fold in the next 2 or 3 years.

All the people who say boxing is in trouble never really understood that it wasn't about how long the peaks lasted or how high they were. The reason boxing is always here is because we have a very large hardcore fan base and we are so diverse that we can survive every valley long enough to reach the next peak.

Can't help one half the main event geting sick last minute.

They had to work with what they had.

Even Tito knew it was going to suck.
