Trainer Teddy Atlas has apparently decided Owen "What the Heck" Beck isn't a good fit for Alexander Povetkin's December 5th ring return in Germany. The ink was supposed to be "all but dried" on the contract but as is often the case in boxing, nothing is ever a done deal until the opening bell actually rings. A source not affiliated with Sauerland Event said that the German promotional company approved Beck as an opponent for the IBF mandatory contender and that everyone else with Team Povetkin was on board with the fight, except Atlas. The fight is only two weeks away and Povetkin's opponent is still to be determined. [details]

Povetkin is being unwise to listen to what that moron Teddy Atlas advises.
Owen Beck is decent but relatively harmless, while the underrated Cedric Boswell is a big puncher, and so presents an unnecessary risk for the IBF mandatory Povetkin. -
yes. most likely povetkin would steamroll nolan but boswell is a bit of a different story and has sneaky shocking power.Comment

Boswell has been on the ring once in like 5 years.I think he beat greenburg.I wouldn't worry about him but he's got power.I think it's Leo nolan he's fighting.atlas did several of his fights commentating.nolan upset lou savarese a few years back.he's got good defence but no power.he did 5 years in jail I think shortly after.Nolan was supposed to fight cameron but dropped out...he's in no danger & atlas is familiar with both.beck was a decent opponent & neither is really a step up.Comment

Cedric Boswell has been more active than most heavyweights: he's fought THREE times in 2009, three times in 2008, and three times in 2007...Boswell has been on the ring once in like 5 years.I think he beat greenburg.I wouldn't worry about him but he's got power.I think it's Leo nolan he's fighting.atlas did several of his fights commentating.nolan upset lou savarese a few years back.he's got good defence but no power.he did 5 years in jail I think shortly after.Nolan was supposed to fight cameron but dropped out...he's in no danger & atlas is familiar with both.beck was a decent opponent & neither is really a step up.
Povetkin has fought only once in 2009.Comment

Good get Beck out of there. Didn't we just learn what happens to stale fighters who don't challenge themselves? If you didn't, rewatch Kessler's performance from Saturday. Seriously, without risk you won't learn, and without challenge you won't progress. Povetkin needs to feel Boswell's power so he knows how to deal with Wlad's shots on a regular basis. I've seen Nolan in the gym and live....he and Beck would be an even fight on a really boring level. Boswell at least tests the young man and prepares him better for Wlad. That really is what Atlas is probably looking at. Nolan has a good jab so maybe he was looking at him for that reason. I was ringside for when Nolan lost to Hector Ferreryo. I thought Leo won the fight by a slim margin, but a lot of other people thought hector won based on his effective agression and the fact that he landed the harder shots. It was a good scrap, but only because ferreryo pushed the action.Comment

maybe that's why he wants him on there with a able opponent who can test povetkin...I always wondered when David haye fights Barrett you say he should step up & fight better guys but now it's an eastern European & he shouldn't risk anything.atlas wants him to be ready for wlad & if he's champion material he should take risks.Comment

Difference between Haye and Povetkin is that Povetkin had earned his title shot already, he's already the IBF mandatory. He's already fought a top 5 heavyweight in Eddie Chambers to earn his shot - someone who wanted to fight Haye but got ducked in the fall of 2008 - while Haye just got his opportunity because of his big mouth.maybe that's why he wants him on there with a able opponent who can test povetkin...I always wondered when David haye fights Barrett you say he should step up & fight better guys but now it's an eastern European & he shouldn't risk anything.atlas wants him to be ready for wlad & if he's champion material he should take risks.
David Haye backed out of fights with the two best heavyweights and chose the easiest route to a title.
Joe, why did you say Cedric Boswell only fought once in five years, when he's actually been fighting three times a year?Comment

I suspect that Teddy feels that Beck would be too tough for Povetkin. He likely remembers that Beck gave WladimirTrainer Teddy Atlas has apparently decided Owen "What the Heck" Beck isn't a good fit for Alexander Povetkin's December 5th ring return in Germany. Klitschko probably his toughest fight, even though he was KO'd in the 7th.
My recollection of that fight is that Beck's very awkward bobbing and bending defence caused most of K's blows to slide harmlessly over Beck's shoulders and back. I think that WK was hardly even able to hit him with his famous Jab until about the 5th rd, when he became acclimatised and also began to throw his right hand, catching him, as I've said, in the 7th.Comment
