I think Team Kessler greatly underestimated Ward. Having a 4 week training camp in 3 different countries spanning 8 timezones and in reality no more than a week and a half real tough sparring just isn't enough at this level. At least that's what I think Kessler disagrees as he said that he was in the shape of his life.
In essense Kessler showed that he hadn't learned anything from the Calzaghe defeat. He was not able or willing to alter a gameplan that simply didn't work. Already from about round 2 or 3 I think some adjustment should have been tried. They didn't and Kessler's shortcomings can now be considered official.
Of course Ward's dirty tactics didn't help. There was some holding and some holding and hitting, but it really wasn't that bad. The butting was bad though. And they weren't needed as Ward was winning anyway. The butts in round 8 and particularly the one in round 10 was as deliberate as any one you'll ever see outside MMA. Since the hometown ref. wasn't willing to even caution Ward Kessler should have fired a couple of shots to Wards nuts for good measure as far as I'm concerned. But Kessler is just to nice for this game.
