Prime Winky was always defensive as the first rule of defense in boxing is to keep your hands up... he always does... Have you ever boxed? If so then I'm sure you seen a bunch a wanna be tough guys come into the gym trying to bullrush their way into the craft. Everybody thinks their punch is special and that no one else can take it. As soon as they meet someone who punches as hard they learn... Any idiot can go gung ho and try to overwhelm someone with punches... it takes time, practice, skill and great reflexes to anticipate, and see punches effectively enough to block them and make them miss completely, it takes even more to stand under fire and find counter punching opportunities which is how you surprise and take the confidence of these idiots who think boxing is just a firefight. ANYONE who thinks it's easy or cowardly, I suggest you jump your dumb ass in the ring and try blocking from any a maniac who thinks they know how to box, much less a world class puncher and then get back to me.

It goes wit the territory, even tho it ain't always true. Defense connotates boxing more, where as offense connotates brawlin more.

There are several forms of self defense built around the principle of disabling an an attacker without throwing back a single punch.

Not in boxing there isn't. You tell me one fighter who won a round or "disabled"a fighter without throwing any punches. And the story about Pep winning a round without throwing a punch is a complete myth. In boxing you can't just make an opponent miss. You have to make him pay or the opponent will walk right through you. A good example is Hector Camacho vs Julio Cesar Chavez and also against tinidad. Watch how far his running and lack of offense got him in those fights.

[QUOTE=Left Hook Tua;6739543]so everyone is willie pep now?

you have to land punches on an opponent to win a round.

making a guy miss more punches shouldn't win you a round.

making a guy miss while you land more punches wins you a round.

                Exactly.

When an Offensive fighter throws punches he can also get hit and possibly hurt and have huge chances off getting hit with a big shot.
Defensive fighters can defend and also throw punches especially against fighters who dont defend and score points and win rounds.
Its hard for an offensive fighter to learn defense (like Hatton), but a defensive fighter already have offensive skills because they have to know how to throw punches and it is easier to get better at doing that than defending punches
