The Gregorian calendar doesn't recognise a year 0, and hence everything from 1AD onwards is officially legit. 2001 was the start of the new millennium, and likewise 2011 will be the start of a new decade. Only an idiot can't see the logic behind that. That the majority of people recognise 2010 as the first year of the upcoming decade doesn't mean it's right.

As for 1BC, it all goes backwards to however far you want. Again, who's saying the years prior to that are non-existent?
