i don't blame him, decade is a pretty tricky concept, i mean you could say it's 10 years or 1/10 of a centry or errr... 2 half decades combined or 120 months. seriously, it's easy to get confused with all those numbers, yo.

The Gregorian calender began with 1 AD. Which was the first year of the first decade AD. There was no such thing as a year zero in the calendar.

So the first decade AD ended on December 31st 10 AD,(10 years later) not December 31st 9 AD as that would have only been 9 years later.

This is common knowledge to the civilized world, but hippies and the ******s on boxing forums refuse to acknowledge these facts.

        this is highly debated...

The new decade will start on January 1st, 2011!There was no year 0 (our calendar went from 1 BC to 1 AD with no 0 inbetween). So the first decade started with the year 1, the second decade with the year 11, the third decade with the year 21, and so on.This decade and century started on January 1, 2001 and ends December 31, 2010.

So the year 2000 was in the 90's? Because the 2000's didn't start until 2001?

oddly enough, most people, organizations, surveys, etc treat the first decade only as a period of 9 years, this is more to fit the format of grouping the years by their respective 10's digits (1850's, 1860's, 1870's, 1880's, 1890's, 2000's).

if you want to debate the technicality that the calendar started with 1 AD, you would have the deal with the exact definition of a "year" and the concept of leap years if you really want to be exact. alot of time period measurements were simplified for a reason and yes were are all expected to use the simplified versions.

I suppose the next thing you will ask me is "why was the 1900's called the 20th century instead of the 19th century." I'll try to make this history lesson as brief as I can...

We started with year 1 and the 1st century

The 2nd century began with year 101 and was aptly called the 2nd century

The 10th century began with the year 901

The 20th century began with the year 1901 and ended on December 31st 2000.

The 21st century(the one we are currently in) began on January 1st 2001 and the first decade of this century will be completed 10 years after January 1st 2001, which will be December 31st 2010, not 2009!
