Real History: How Serious is Pacquiao’s Quest for Seven?

By Cliff Rold - It doesn’t take much to be amazed by reigning World Jr. Welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao (49-3-2, 37 KO). Much has been written about the accomplishments of Pacquiao, particularly in the last year, as they reached unprecedented levels.

When a left hook for the ages left then-140 lb. champion Ricky Hatton stiff in the center of the ring on May 2 of this year, Pacquiao did something no fighter in the history of boxing had ever done. He added a fourth lineal World title to his trophy case while also tying Oscar De La Hoya’s record of title claims in six weight divisions.

This weekend, at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada and broadcast on pay-per-view, the world gets the most anticipated fight of the year, a contest which can literally not get here fast enough. Pacquiao goes for a title claim in his seventh weight division, Welterweight, or 147 lbs., challenging Miguel Cotto (34-1, 27 KO) for the WBO belt. It is Pacquiao’s second fight in the Welterweight division, a span of ten from his pro debut and nine since he won his first title. [details]

This would be a one in a million amazing feat if Pacquaio accomplishes this, and I know he's gonna give it all to do this. He's taking this fight more serious than any other he's had in his illustrious career. This this fight hold so much weight that if he wins it will catapult his career to the very upper echelon of the all-time boxing history.

even if Cotto weighs 147lbs on the weigh in AND more than 10 lbs on fight night and Pac wins, some will still not compare him favorably to the "immortals"......

NOW, in my opinion Bob Arum comes out of this smelling like roses. If I was a part of team Cotto I would have told Cotto, if I have to come down to a catchweight of 145lbs. We need to renegotiate the purse. From my understanding Pacman is getting $7.5M amd Cotto is getting $4.M based on
scale. Now they will get a percentage of HBO PPV buys. But-- If I was in Cotto's corner I would have at least demanded $5.5M or $6M for this fight! NO other fighter could have made this a Mega fighter outside of Floyd "Money" Mayweather fight. Because Bob Arum is the promoter for both fighters Cotto and Pacman, he knew this would be BIG! After it's all said and done he walks away with somewhere in the neighborhood of $40M to $50Million in his pockets or more..... Is that Brilliant or What?!??!!?$$ The good thing is... he never takes a punch! Kudos to Bob! You Son---bi--ch...you.
How dare you take advantage of these young boxers like that! I do know Floyd "Money" Mayweather is smarter than that! So--- you will make it hard for Floyd to make a fight with either fighter. Bob you are not doing this for DIE hard fans like myself and others. You could give a damn about us.... It's all about you. Oscar Dela Hoya and Floyd Mayweather used to be promoted by you and they woke UP. They saw the sh-t you was doing. You are worst than Don King and most people thinks Don King is bad.... Oh you are all about yourself Bob Arum..... But I guess that's why you are in the Business, so Me being a business man myself I have to go along with what makes sense. My hat goes off to you! Let's see a good fight Saturday-nite.

I will be away for three days, so i will post this comment early. Sunday, 15th November - The fight should have been stopped at round 1. It is obvious that Cotto could not take severe punishment anymore, however, his corner kept him fighting desparately for one more round to try to land a lucky punch. I wish Cotto recovers well, replace his trainer, and continue boxing for Puerto Rico.

It will be significant but not look as good since it wasn't actually at 147 pounds...

And when history looks back they will see he got his titles at 135 and 140 against decent opposition...Diaz is not very good and Hatton looked to be declining...but Cotto is a very good fighter and Pac should get a lotta credit for the win, catchweight or not...

At the end of the day its who you beat before belts which is why Floyd and Oscar aren't in any1's top 15-20...

Hatton is the Lineal / Ring champ coming off a dominating victory over Maliggnagi. Beating other fighters like Bradley or Urango would be the most dissapointing step for Pac's career
