First of all I'm not one to just take anybody's word easily, and this is not a statement by any means , but is something that , once I heard it , It didnt make complete sense , but it was the closest thing to having any sense , and actually some kind of evidence , not hard evidence , call it more like a personal statement shared by mutual opponents.
So I'm with my friend in one of his amateur bout , Hes actually pretty good 9-0-7 Hes from Cuban descent. Trying to make it to the olympics. But getting back to topic. Im listening to this trainer , Not any famous Trainer , just a regular guy. And this i what he shares , his logic about the famous plaster incident involving Antonio Margarito!!!
He said first of all , I have wrapped hands more than 1,000 times , and there hasn't been a time , where my fighter doesn't know what I'm doing or a time where he doesn't look down at what I'm doing. "Considering Mosley and even Clottey confirmed Cotto hits harder than Margarito and also considering Both Clottey and Mosley , each gave his share of shots to Cotto for 12 rounds , tells me that there was something more than gassing out issues in that fight".
Think about this , and he also said this , not my words. "Mosley and Cotto where going toe to toe since the beginning , Margarito was getting outboxed since the beggining. Cotto actually outboxed Margarito more effectively within the first 5 rounds , Making Cotto - Mosley clearly look like it would have had the same effect on Cotto's face , not talking about stamina. All of a sudden , Margarito sharpens his attack between the mid-point of the 6th. But Cotto still manages to outbox him and land his share of big shots. So he was winning up to that point. And in the sixth Cotto was still in control , Taking more sharper shots , but handing out his share. So it is the 7th round , and lets consider this. Comparing Cotto - Mosley and Cotto - Margarito , in the start of the 7th round , Cotto was beating Margarito more convincingly than he was Moley. So that leaves 5 rounds. And Cotto might have stamina issues , but gassing out in the 7th?????? Forget his stamina isues , You cant make a guys face , look like that in 5 rounds ,lets be considerate and give margarito 6 rounds of sharp punches , you still need more than gassing out issues , to make a guy's face look the way Cotto's did. Thats just comparing Mosley - Cotto , how about Clottey - Cotto , which was even worst than what Mosley did. He actually had Cotto's eye with a cut , and was hitting Cotto with big shots since the opening bell. You didnt see Cotto' face swell against Clottey. And he and Clottey went toe - toe for 12 , Mosley and Cotto went toe to toe for 12 , Margarito didnt go toe to toe for 11 rounds with Cotto. Cotto outboxed him impressively for lets say 5 , You just dont do that to a guys face in 6 rounds , 6 rounds where he wasnt even in complete control , Margarito was in complete control from the mid-point of the 7th round. Which just leaves 4 rounds , for proof , that there was more than gassing out issues , but thats just about his stamina. What about the way his face looked. And it swelled up. In 4 rounds? lets give him 5? Still , No way!!!"
It is an impressive point of view on The hand wraps topic. One that has been discussed plenty of times here. But even so , I have never seen an analysis of the incident , which such different and fresh points , So thats why I am sharing it with you guys. I think that even tho it is not hard evidence , and even tho we will never know. Those are very important points to consider. And as much as I want to give Margarito the benefit of the doubt , That explanation , at least to me , makes complete sense. Cottos face has never looked like that. And has been deeper in fights going into the 6th round. So in 5 rounds , giving Margarito maximum rounds in control , Cuz he wasnt at all in the 5th. Forget about exhaustion. Cotto's face could not look like that in such short time.!!!!
