Cruiserweights - a division in serious need of reappraisal?

Why IS the Cruiserweight division the most overlooked division, traditionally? Even strawweights laugh at 'em, yet this is the division just below heavyweight. These guys knock seven shades out of each other and should, surely, get more appeal. Here's my take:

    1. The name. For a start, "Cruiser" sounds far too lax for a weight category. It's like calling a division the "pacyweights" or the "takeyourtimeweights" or the "can'tbearsedweights".

Think about it - if you asked a person who knew NOTHING about boxing which was the next heaviest weight below Heavy - Cruiser or Light-Heavy - what would they say?

    2. The contenders. Who are the cruisers? God knows. Actually, this is ONE division in which I can praise Limeys. One of the top-ranked is... um... no, the name's gone. But David Haye is an entertaining prospect and I love Carl "The Cat" Thompson to pieces.

What say the rest of you?

Traditionally the Crusierweight division was for fat lightheavies like Qawi to compete in and not have to maintain weight. It also served as a safe haven for heavyweights who just weren`t big enough to compete with the big guys ( Arthur Williams, Johnny Nelson etc.. )
If a big name with talent came along ( the likes of Holyfield, to some extent Micheal Moorer ) then they would be tempted by the money and move to the heavyweight division.
It could be argued that the crusierweight division CAN NEVER be a popular one because of it being so close to the heavywights. As soon as a dominant crusier comes along ( Holyfield, Gomez ) they move to heavyweight. The winner of this weekends crusier clash will probably be a heavyweight next year, you watch!

I've been saying that for awhile, the cruiserweights have something to offer. Here are some examples of why:

      1. Wayne Braithwaite, a big punching slugging southpaw with good hand speed.
      2. Jean Marc Mormeck, very tough, big puncher.
      3. Kelvin Davis, supplants Cliff Couser as the best Mike Tyson impersonator.

Reasons why the cruiserweight division is bad:

      1. No one wants to be there. Roy Jones passed the division like it was a bad part of town you don't even want to stop in for gas.
      2. They are smaller than heavyweights, and slower than light heavyweights.
      3. James Toney left it.
      4. Vasiliy Jirov left it.
      5. Carl Thompson is 80 years old.

Cruiserweights should be ignored. Most boxers in that category either should be able to make it down to light heavyweight, or just move up.
Its a division where out of shape fighters can hide.

1 fighter in the cruiserweight division as far as I am concerned.

            The absolute best cruiser:

Oneil "give em hell" Bell. That guy is an assasin. He punches just as hard P4P as anyone in boxing IMO. This guy is a wrecking ball. Look out for him. Take my word for it.

It has become more than apparent that Jirov can not compete with the heavyweights.

I thought Cruseirweight was gonna explode and be the hottest division in boxing a few years ago. The division is much better than people like to give it credit for.

The 3 belt holders are all exciting big punchers.

                  Braiwthatw
                  Mormeck
                  Davis

                  then you have

O'Neal Bell who always gives you a good fight.
                  Dale Brown is always tough.

Just imagine if Toney, Gomez and Jirov had stayed.

This is actually a suprise. if i am not mistaken i think Jirov and Gomez shared promotional company. And Toney was workable, as he wasn`t with Don King. i think no body wanted to risk anything in a division where if your not champ your not there......
