It is a simple quick way to build a guy up for other things, if you include a bunch of dudes who is really left out there for the winner to go after.

140 is a pretty strong division, so having a youngster come out could make for some interesting fights that don't really need the bank broken to make.

it will never happen, there wont be a welterweight tourney either, too many big names and they all want like 100mill per fight. if a 140 or 147 tourney happens expect no big names in there, maybe all journeymen we never even heard of.

That is why you do it at 140 with just up and commers.

You are telling me Alexander, Ortiz, Maidana and Khan would be hard to get. Khan would logically be the most difficult but if he is comming to the US he needs to amke a name for himself so this would be a pretty good start. If one or two of these dudes don't want in get Urango, Holt or possibly Campbell (not an up and commer but his demands most likely would not be to high). Those are all quality fighters.

            This tourny lacks something.

Oh yeah the best Junior Welterweight, Tim Bradley.

I like the idea, though it doesn't crown anything other than the second best 140 pounder.

Am I the only person here who thinks HBO are opportunists?

Don't get me wrong I love the idea of this and any tournament and thinks it's fantastic for the sport!!! BUT we've been begging HBO for this for years & they've had a boxing monopoly, have ignored our pleas then ****** all of a sudden put this on.

I'll pay for any Showtime PPV I feel like watching because they're being proactive for the sport whereas HBO have been more reactive. For HBO I'll just go round a mates or grab a pub stream - they'll never get a penny off me directly.......blocking Clottey/Williams.....and the crap they've done for Mosley...pfff...opportunists

They could always line up the winner of this against Bradley (if he can get by Peterson and keep on winning after).

Would that not be a decent fight?

I agree this is not really a tourney to crown anyone the best (other then among the men involved) but it is a good tool to set things up in the future.

They probably could, and they should. I just hope HBO doesn't act like this is the 140 pound Championship so to speak. And I think they will.

Bradley beat two 140 titlists and the unified 135 titlist (unofficially).

They would make a big deal about the winner no doubt, but I think they would use this as a spring board for them to line them up against other good fighters.

This is a cheap way to build up a guy but they would need to keep building. The winner against Bradley (or Peterson), Urango, JMM (maybe?), Campbell (if he can stick around), Holt (maybe?), Judah (lol maybe?) or even Floyd/Manny (although the winner would have to run off a couple more wins against solid competition to really be that far up the totem poll).

Just using Bradley as an example because right now he would be the best guy, HBO would build the fight between the winner huge so even if they really propped up the winner they would still recognize Bradley as one of the top guys. Really it would not be all that expensive to make either.
