In addition to low ratings for the initial showing (under 2 million viewers), VOD viewership was also low.

Nielsen Media Ratings for HBO BAD & ESPN
        by John Chavez
        Sep 04, 2009 -
        Ok, ok... they're finally here.

People keep harrassing me for the Nielsen Media figures for our most recent boxing shows so I must provide and oblige. While boxing on U.S. television had taken a short hiatus both prior to and following these most recent shows, apparently there is still some interest in this game of fisticuffs.

Here are the Nielsen Media ratings for boxing's most recent battles:

8-22-2009 - HBO - Boxing After Dark - Paulie Malignaggi vs. Juan Diaz - 1.139 Million Live Viewers
8-28-2009 - ESPN - Friday Night Fights - Juan Urango vs. Randall Bailey - 556,000 Live Viewers
        8-29-2009 - HBO - 24/7 Countdown to Mayweather-Marquez - 529,000 Live Viewers

I understand that HBO is very interested in a rematch between Malignaggi and Diaz due to the "elevated" ratings. I'm not quite sure what constitutes a significant bump up in the figures as Andre Berto vs. Juan Urango earlier this year garnered 935,000 live viewers.

Either way... if HBO starts paying attention to the ratings, perhaps they'd be able to coincide their budget to a bout with the ratings it generates in the end.

There's no need in overpaying for a fight that will not garner the figures you're looking for.

Manny Pacquiao became 'street urchin' after his father ate his dog

Manny Pacquiao's trainer Freddie Roach has revealed the extraordinary moment when the boxer, as a young boy, ran away from home in the Philippines after his father had eaten his pet dog.
              By Gareth A Davies
              Published: 11:55PM GMT 04 Mar 2009

Pacquiao took to living on the streets, sleeping rough, many nights sleeping just in a cardboard box, buying doughnuts and then selling them for a penny more to eke out a living. Pacquiao then turned professional as a 14-year-old, boxing for money to escape poverty.

The incredible story of the rags to riches life of Pacquiao, his escape from poverty, his willingness to give his money away to the people who adore him, may give him the opportunity, some time in the next decade, many believe, to rise and run for the presidency of the Philippines.

Pacquiao will fight Hatton down the line - it is inevitableRicky Hatton may be popular, but Pacquiao has demi-God status in his homeland. Roach, who has trained great fighters including Mike Tyson, Oscar De La Hoya, and Bernard Hopkins among others, told Telegraph Sport: "Manny has the most incredible following of any fighter I've ever worked with. You have to go to the Philippines to believe it. You have to remember where he came from, that he fought his way out of poverty."

"Manny ran away from home after his father ate his dog,
and he lived on the street, where he bought doughnuts at a doughnut store and then sold each one for a nickel more to survive. He slept in a cardboard box. He fought his way through all this, turned pro at 14, and look at the man he is today."

Pacquiao's popularity with his compatriots knows no bounds. "It's just unbelievable," said Roach. "I went to his birthday party, the President of the Philippines was there, there were 5000 people at the party, and 10,000 outside who couldn't get in. He's an icon, because he represents the hopes of so many people."

"When he fights, there is no crime in the Philippines, because everyone is watching him box. He has come such a long way. He wants to go into politics, he's going to college right now, and after two more years of boxing, he will go into politics."

"I love training Manny. He doesn't stop between rounds, he doesn't rest. He's a machine. He fights like he trains, that's why he's in such great shape. We don't take anyone lightly, and he carries the hopes of many people when he fights. That's why we'll be in 100 per cent shape for this fight."

The raising and consumption of dog meat has been linked to the transmission of rabies to humans with two reported cases in China, one in Vietnam, and two deaths reported in the Philippines.[12]

nah the 24/7 is nice....u learn **** about the fighters, and see sides of them you wouldn't get to see otherwise. u get to see their "human" side, not just the gladiators they become when they get into the ring. 24/7's cool IMO.

i'll actually feel a little bad for cotto after the 14th.

It is outlawed by the Philippines authorities, but an apparent lack of will, police corruption and inadequate penalties mean it continues much as before.

The area around Baguio City is the dog-eating centre of the Philippines where for centuries people have killed and eaten the animals with impunity.

Side note....where was manny pacquiao's training camp?
