Mesi has some good things going for him, but he's still pretty raw, much like I'd expect any good quality prospect to be. True, he's been overrated by many, but hey.....the same people who overrate him, are the same ones that jump on the bandwagon of every heavy that has a big punch and a go-getum style. Best to just ignore the hype, and watch his fights with the volume down really low, or off. Also, his Jirov fight showed he's at least willing to get his ass up off the canvas ASAP and get back to work after getting tagged good. That's a good thing. His "chin" may or may not be good, too hard to tell from that one fight, because once you get smacked by one good shot, the ones that follow it count alot more. I'd like to see him fight again, if for no other reason than to see what he's done to correct the holes in his defense since that fight.

And yes, I agree that if he were tossed into the ring with Klitchko or the Rock, he'd be meat-on-a-stick, but that's as it should be. Like I said, the kid's just a prospect. If he gets his license back, watch him for another year or two and see what happens. He'll either continue his move upwards, or retire after getting bounced off the canvas another half-dozen times.

i think hes to small to make any serious noise "as in put in titles in danger" at HW
i doubt mesi can go to cruiser, he cn't lose that much weight
sure he boxed jirov, but remember that jirov isn't a HW orignningally, hes a cruiser. the stamina problem is the main issue i c, he hasn't fought 12 rounds yet.
        i've never seen a contendor who hasn't fought 12

Mesi isn't over-rated when you put him against the rest of the heavyweight divison. He is limited by his chin and his stamina, but the guy has great power speed and heart.

He will never fight again though, so there is no point in debating it.

I'm not sure he is not going to fight again. Every time we hear him talk about the issue he sound pretty dumb talking about "I'm going to be back in the ring" "I'm recovering" "The injury is not that bad".

I think we will see him back in action in a year or two and it's gonna be ugly since he doesn't seem to be able to protect himself properly.

i didn't think mesi was that bad. he had some power and could set up some good shots. i give him respect for going the distance with jirov, whether he took a beating or not, he deserves respect. Also it is not sacrilidge to talk about boxers who don't fight anymore...hello.

There is no way you can judge if Mesi was over-rated yet. He's an up and comer, and there are reasons why he never fought any top ten rated fighters. I can't say that I agree with the rankings, because he didn't defeat anyone credible to be ranked the #1 WBC contender before his incident occurred.

You guys are also forgetting that Mesi was the victim of a nasty rabbit punch. Intentional or not (I doubt it was intentional) it ruined everything, and is considered to be the very cause of his brain hemotoma. The amount of granite in your chin doesn't mean jack **** when you take a rabbit punch. After that, his equilibrium was thrown off, and that accounts for the numerous follow-up knockdowns.

He was a bit lackadaiscal against Monte Barrett in the later rounds, but conditioning is the main reason for that. He was performing impressively prior, and that is undeniable. Barrett is a credible heavyweight who put away the rising "star" in Guinn.

Mesi has explosive power, he has one-punch knockout potential, and against the likes of the heavyweight division today he had a serious chance. Every up and comer has some growth to do, and he admitted that following every single fight in the interview.

As far as his injury is concerned, he has a review coming up with the Nevada State Athletic Commission in April. That hearing will officially decide whether Mesi is fit or not to step back into the ring. So, you can't say his career is over for good or not, yet.
