Comments Thread For: New Ali Act's one belt per weight class plan answers one of boxing's ills

A bipartisan effort moved the Muhammad Ali American Boxing Revival Act closely to reality Wednesday. One of its latest *********s should please the wide spectrum of the sport?s followers who disdain the prevalence of belts.

That is never going to happen. Too many promoters have their grasps on some of the sanctioning bodies who also plays favoritism and bend the rules for star fighters.

It would be great if it happened and the word contender will have meaning again.

sounds like a solid idea but knowing what i know about the powers pushing for change in Boxing i feel they could be hiding something in the entire mix. Call me cautious ........been burned before by false advertising in the fight game......

I always felt 3 belts with no super, regular, interim BS was the perfect amount. I could cope with 4 but within the last 10-15 years it’s become absolutely ridiculous. The WBA have been the pioneers in pointless belts, the WBC aren’t far behind with their special belts, then anytime we do get a Undisputed Champion, the IBF order him to fight some nobody and then strip him. It’s such a minefield.

Zuffa are a joke and are certainly not the answer, but something had to give.

Dana is simply trying to put his hands into the boxing mix with what he believes work in UFC. That's fine and all, but I think fighters themselves are happier with the idea that they can command big purses and maneuver through a career where they're champion alongside another fighter. It gives them clout and then the idea of becoming Undisputed eventually. Ultimately the idea of being able to become champion of a belt is enough for most fighters. Again, then how they navigate after becoming champion regardless of which belt or how many belts they have, by being considered champion commands bigger paychecks.

Now you're saying, let's only have 1 champion who gets paid probably "decent" by UFC standards and really pay the fighters below champion level peanuts. I'm not sure how many fighters they'll attract to this model. It sounds good for the fans to have 1 recognizable champion but once again, if boxing will exist with the other belts, Zuffa is just ANOTHER one. Sure, it's its own league but there will be arguments that the real champ is so and so because they have 3 of the 4 other belts and whatever. Consider it more confusion to add to the sport that is already all over the place.

whatever system is in place it needs to stop someone like canelo holding up an entire division if he wont fight the best guy or guys people like him are pandered too too much and that cant change with people like the wbc doing the pandering the wba are hopeless as well and they are the so called top belts so what hope is there i dont see any

having 1 champ would be better overall i would say, the camp can say im the champ instead of lots of mini champs all claiming people are avoiding them well if there is one champ hes the only one that can claim that and have being the champ giving some cash benefits as well make it very prestigious to get the top guy status and u have to fight the top guys to do it like ufc do that so boxers will have more loses on their records but who cares they all lose evetntally anyway when they stop ducking each other good boxers lose fights to different styles who they avoid if they can

But what about the WBC's special commemorative belts!??!?!??!? Their Cucaracha belt and the Horchata belt are pretty popular.

                It's a shit sandwich.

Christ, too many essays in the comments section nobody reads.

I'll just say this is a good start, but 4 belts is still to many, how about 1.

They should shorten the term of fighter contracts to 4 years, maybe even 3. That way no boxer is ever locked in to a bad deal for too long and can be free to renegotiate.
