Like most things about the guy, he very likely exaggerated how good he was to begin with. His kickboxing record is difficult to verify. He has the air of a guy who enjoys picking on people he perceives as weaker than him (i.e. a bully) and this backfired.

He only faced 3 world level kickboxers in his entire career and all of them easily beat him. Tate was never, at any point, one of the top 50 guys in his already shallow weight class.

No lessons will be learned, George Carlin was right so if you bet on anything to gain popularity count on the foolishness and gullibility of about half of people everywhere. Next time there is some investment that I think is dumb but is likely to gain traction because its sexy and promises high returns for no good reasons I think I'll throw a little down and leave people holding the bag.
