This win against Canelo has gone to his head so much his ego is actually insane. Fair play for winning when most people thought he would lose but make no mistake Canelo has been on the decline for around 5 years looking worse with each fight so lets not pretend he beat prime Canelo. Bud despite being a great fighter just doesn't have the resume to be in the conversation with Pacquiao or Mayweather, his best 2 wins are against faded fighters in Spence and Canelo other than that his resume is pretty lackluster.

I think you may be on to something with boxing not having a structured league or schedule causing it to lead to more self promotion. And for certain, the gentlemanly nature of the country club sports probably brings out a bit more decorum than boxing, remember how shocked people were when Andre Agasi Didn't wear all white?
I definitely think that's a factor, but it does seem to be quite particular to boxing. You didn't for example see Roger Federer yelling about how he is the greatest tennis player in the world in interviews even when he obviously was. Factors worth considering are the types of character drawn into prize fighting: it's not something most men can do and requires a high level of competitiveness and selfishness. Also the lack of structure in boxing lends itself to self-promotion. Federer didn't have to make a lot of noise to get to the Wimbledon final, he just had to play well enough. Whereas boxers can be denied an opportunity at the world championship for years even when they obviously deserve it.
The 'lack of recognition' narrative is an interesting one. I haven't actually heard Floyd Mayweather speak for a long time, but he continued to imply he wasn't sufficiently recognised after he retired. He interrupted a post-fight interview with Curmel Moton once when a journalist implied he was being mentored by 'one of' the greatest boxers of all time rather than 'the' greatest. It would be interesting to ask these guys what a sufficient amount of recognition would look like in practice.
I also wonder if the protecting the '0' culture that has come about in modern boxing has something to do with it? A century ago all the best fighters fought dozens of times a year just to make a living, and as such the occasional loss came about, with such a busy schedule and large sample size its bound to happen. Nowadays though, the top fighters fight less often and can make a long career without taking a loss, or taking so few that they can explain away the few they do take ("I felt I did what I needed to do to win....")
Compare that with other individual sports, Federer only won about 30% of the tournaments he entered, Tiger Woods less than 10%. They were the greatest at their sport, but lost far more events than they won due to the nature of their sport.👍 1Comment

you know why TBud and Floyd are vastly superior to manny
because boxing would be deep fried if the best carries itself this way
