20 straight title defenses…tied with Bernard Hopkins. When you decide to go this route, you sacrifice being a moneymaker because the number 1’s and 2’s of different sanctioning bodies aren’t always the most lucrative. He had no choice but to do this in light of everyone seeking shelter and avoiding him. It turned out alright for him because he was able to get a long streak going AND a long KO streak going.

Fun fact: if GGG had knocked out Daniel Jacobs, he would’ve broken Wilfredo Gomez’s record of most consecutive title defenses via KO/TKO. When Jacobs went the distance, I was relieved. I want Gomez to keep that record for at least a decade more. Naoya had the best chance of smashing it, but I think him moving up in weight changed that. And I think he’s gone the distance a couple times now. Gomez was just knocking out fools left and right.
