Actually it's kali. A filipino martial art thats been modified for sport. Basketball is the most popular conventional sport though. Just like baseball is the national sport of the US but the NFL has been much more popular than baseball for quite some time now.Comment

THANK-YOU, i can't believe PAC is all they know. Great fighters have alway come out of the Philippines!!!In the history or currently
The history Phillipine boxing goes back to the 20's with hall of famer Pancho Villa
The Philippines has had more than 1 major champion every decade since the 1920's
The Philippines had a middleweight Champ, Ceferino Garcia, who prevented Henry armstrong from winning another division title. He also was the person who invented the Bolo punch.
The Philippines had Flash Elorde a HOF who was hailed by ring magazine as the best super featherweight of all time. He beat Sandy Sadler and lost a close rematch in a dirty fight. He was hailed by duran as inspiration.
These are just some notable fighters but there are many past fighters like Small Montana, Rolando Navarette, Luisito Espinosa, Ben Villaflor etc. etc. Like I said the Philippines has had at least 1 champ every decade since the 1920's.
Don't let lack popularity equate to a lack of history. The Philppines was one of the founding countries in the WBC and the first president was Filipino.
Currently the Philippines have 2 fighters in the # for # list and have many prospects and a significant amount of champions
Sonsona
Donaire - gave up belt
Villoria
Pacquiao
Nietes
Penalosa -gave up belt
The Philippines is not as popular as Mexico or Puerto Rico in the United States because the fan base is 1000 of miles away and the idea that a Pinoy won't sell PPV's or seats has somehow brought opportunities only once in a blue moon until Pacquiao who has proven that a Pinoy will sell in the U.S. given the increasing numbers of American Filipinos.
Don't be ignorant.Comment

^^ like what he said.
...and let us be honest, any country would find it hard to produce one of Pac's caliber on a regular basis.
...when did kali become the national sport? i thought it was sepak takraw?Comment

pinoys were fighting with their fists against americans with guns in philippines-american war...Comment

i know. with bolos too. some were called huramentados and couldn't be stopped by standard issue guns, hence the invention of .45 calibre.
...but what the hell does this have to do with the thread topic?
