manny landed the vast majority of clean punches in that fight. you seem to be tthinking going backwards and creating so much distance you cant reach your opponent with effective punches is "good" footwork. manny used his footwork to get close and land those clean hard shots that rocked floyds head around. floyd used his to do that little air jab that barely grazed pac and made no impact. thats not a good example of using footwork to set yourself up for success.
