I thought he did much better against Canelo than the commentators made it seem. The optics of that fight was just as much Canelo's fault as it was Scull's.

Canelo got right in front of him then was just posturing and blocking jabs, following Scull around the ring for 12 rds. It was like he was worried about gassing out so didn't let his hands go.

Not too dissimilar to what happened against Crawford, then. I don't think it's overreaching to say that his team were probably aware of his decline and knew he no longer had the output to deal with a bigger and stronger guy like Benavidez.
