No-one is going to be impressed. They're putting Whittaker in with a 30 year old journeyman who's been fighting in school gymnasiums and small shows for years, also against weak opposition.
Whittaker himself will be 30 soon enough, so time is running out. If Matchroom really believed in him they'd put him in with someone a few levels higher to fast track him to world level. This is just a way to delay the inevitable day when Whittaker gets found out.
FN are reporting that the vacant WBC 'silver' belt will be on the line; they also provide an extended quote from Hearn who refers to this as a 'major title shot'. Gavazi doesn't even make the WBC's top 40 and Boxrec have him #50 in the world. This will no doubt push Whittaker (WBC #9 somehow) up the rankings.
This Gavasi guy has 20 fights. Only 5 have been against opponents with winning records. He's 1 month shy of a year long layoff. This is a showcase fight for Whittaker, but its a poor show.
Just realised Whittaker only has 10 fights. Also he has 0 expierence when it comes to tough fights that going longer than 8rounds. My guess they will move him very very slowly. Only problem to develope a fighter and give him the right experience you need to give him competetive fights but Matchroom is known for horrible matchmaking, so i guess they wont take any chances at all with their new golden child.
My prediction they will match him with slow weak opps for 2-3 years making him look spectacular while eddie is claiming he is the best since Roy Jones jr and then go for a crazy jump facing someone like Benavidez or Morrell if they not moved up by then. In that first big jump he will be stopped badly.
People forget he's only had 10 fights.
He was 'exposed' v Cameron in his 9th fight.
Probably best to judge him after 15 fights... Even though I do think his power and footwork isn't the level he needs it to be to get past European level.
