Comments Thread For: Boxing judge Steve Weisfeld always knows the score

Steve Weisfeld, widely regarded for the last decade or two as the most reliable ringside scorer in the game, tried something different on one occasion. When he was learning the proverbial ropes as an amateur judge in the late ?80s and early ?90s, he took one shot at being the referee in a bout. ?It wasn?t for me,? he quickly learned.

Except when he's guzzling Canelo's balls like in the Golovkin and Bivol fights.

Steve is a good guy, he's a lawyer in NJ. Played tennis with him once, pretty good player. One of the better boxing judges of the modern era. Nobody's perfect.

I like to score boxing matches. I have over 500 fights recorded on BoxRec. I sometimes compare my scores with those of other judges, and Steve Weisfeld's scores are the ones I agree with the most in percentage terms.

Steve is as solid a judge as you'll find and a good guy, we need more like him in boxing.

Excellent read. He actually had a response to "Tonight, I'll be taking you inside the mind of a judge".

(Props to those who get that one.)

A top judge who's fair, pretty rare.

I do think if a round looks very even, then score it even, can't just score a round for a boxer just because he walks forward.

A judge's job is tough though, no doubt. Don't forget, from where a judge is sitting, they can't see everything.

When there's a bit of an exchange in one of the corners that are on opposite of the judge, he or she can't see properly.

Writer should have touched on how much judges get paid for judging fights, title fights, prelims, etc. This is important fact. For example, Arthur Mercante revealed how much he was paid to ref the Ali-Frazier 1 fight in this interview, interesting amount! https://ringobserver.com/biofile-art...-sr-interview/

Judges are highly discouraged from scoring a round even. There's always one guy who landed more or did more damage , even if it's just one punch. That's why you constantly have to keep track of who is ahead like Weisfeld said. You can't lose focus for even a second. It's a lot different than watching a fight for fun and then giving the close rounds to the guy that you favor as most people do who later complain about the judges. Not saying that sometimes they don't screw the pooch because they do , not everyone is equally good at their jobs . To your last point , you can't score a punch that you didn't see , sometimes fighters screw themselves by liking to fight off of the ropes or letting themselves get put there. For the most part though judges have a pretty good view, the best in the house right on the ring apron.
