Bad night for Sugar, with Rakhimov, and Rikiishi he performed better, more attentively and pressuring. They were good rivals, but if it’s today’s version of Nunez, Vaquero could knock him out badly with an uppercut.

I turn on the sound at the end of Nunez/Diaz and the commentary was damn near orgxsmic and calling it a FOTY candidate. I was underwhelmed. The fight didn't really get going until the 6th round, and you can tell Nunez was feeling immense pressure from defending his title in front of a home crowd. I remember when Rocky Hernandez decided to box vs. Daniel Lugo and the fight only turned in his favor once he reverted to his normal style. That's how Nunez looked tonight: a fighter stuck between styles whose team looked like they over-strategized. The slippery ass ring also greatly affected both fighters and the outcome with those knockdowns. The corners need to be more careful with their water usage.

It was definitely a meh night for Nunez, and maybe he simply performs better on the road. You never know how fighters will behave when they fight at home in a title fight. Diaz looked sharp and motivated, so this fight should've turned out much better than it was. The important thing for Nunez is that he was able to avoid a major upset, and he hopefully moves on to bigger match-ups. Nunez still stands a good chance vs. the other champions because they are imperfect as well. I like Fulton, and we'll see how he performs vs. Foster. But I don't expect Fulton (if he wins) to fight Nunez. Nunez is potentially the most physically taxing match-up out of all current titlists, and he probably won't get the money he's looking for.

I agree with your assessment, Nunez underperformed based on the strategy, and circumstances. Take in mind that he took an immediate camp after coming off a bout for the title, likely made him be overconfident, worn out and quite nervous at the homecoming fight where he no longer is the challenger for the first time. He likely thought he could box to catch Diaz once he overcomitted, but didn't take into account how game Christopher would be for a title shot at enemy territory, only ever stopped by Navarrete after going 12 rounds.

Nunez's offense is also part of his defense, as the pressure disarms and limits his opponents when he takes the initiative.

Most of the super featherweights do have off nights too. Any of the champions have a solid chance against one another.
