Comments Thread For: Split gloves and loose ropes: Remembering Angelo Dundee

Angelo Dundee hadn?t necessarily anticipated a career in and around the sweet science. But when the bell rang between rounds, he took over like no trainer before or after.

A fantastic article, great job by the writer. Sadly there are hardly any comments as this generation has no clue how great Angelo Dundee was or the fighters he trained....

I really liked the man that Ali was. He did a lot of great things and really lived. He was a great fighter, but he was knocked out by Henry Cooper! Dundee was a great trainer, but why is he being celebrated for cheating? He admits he cheated and robbed Henry Cooper of the win! It was not fair! Personally, I do not like liars and cheaters!

A lot of fighters said that having Dundee in their corner made them better, and he did, and they were. I remember when Angelo saved Lenard from defeat. The guy was so good that some fighters used him for credibility, I believe Oscar was certainly one of them. Eddie Futch was another legend, fighters would seek these guys out to gain an edge. Great trainers don't guarantee wins, they make changes that get the best out of what the fighter brings to the table.

The glove thing wasn't a lunch break, it was a matter of seconds. Cooper had 3 close dirty rounds, holding and hitting and winging shots until Ali turned Cooper into a bobble head.
